Belts

V-belts provide better power transmission than flat belts. V-belts have tapered sides that fit into grooves on pulleys, which prevents slipping and ensures efficient power transfer. They require less precise pulley alignment than flat belts, can transmit power over larger distances, and generally last longer. However, flat belts are better suited for applications that require synchronous speeds or involve smaller pulleys spaced farther apart. Overall, V-belts offer advantages in terms of power transmission efficiency, durability, and ease of installation that make them better for most industrial applications compared to flat belts.

Why Vee belt is better than Flat belt?

A Belt is a loop of flexible material used to link two or more rotating shafts mechanically. Belts
may be used as a source of motion, to transmit power efficiently, or to track relative movement.

Flat belt:
A belt consisting of a flat loop of material used to transmit motion between two pulleys. Flat
belts can be made of various materials, such as rubber, canvas, plastic, or flexible metals.

Advantages :

 Flat belts are used in power transmission and conveying systems.

 They are noted for their power transmission efficiency, cost effectiveness and ease of
installation and use.
 They are convenient to install and operate and are reliable.
 Thin belts track perfectly satisfactorily, but not exactly enough to mesh with metal combs
where even a very slight lateral movement will severely damage the belt.
 A good modern use for a flat belt is with smaller pulleys and large central distances. They
can connect inside and outside pulleys, and can come in both endless and jointed
construction.

Disadvantages :
 Flat belt pulleys need to be carefully aligned to prevent the belt from slipping off.
 The flat belt also tends to slip on the pulley face when heavy loads are applied.
 In practice, flat belts are often given a half-twist before joining the ends so that wear is
evenly distributed on both sides of the belt.
 Scarcer at shops than bicycles with conventional chain.

V-belt :
A belt with a flat bottom and tapered sides, used to transmit motion between two
pulleys.Multiple V-belts are often used together in order to increase the power.

Advantages :
 It is now the basic belt for power transmission.
 They provide the best combination of traction, speed of movement, load of the bearings,
and long service life.
 The v belt drive gives compactness due to small distance between the centre of pulleys.
 The drive is positive because the slip between the belt and the pulley groove is negligible.
 It provides longer life,3 to 5 years.
 It can be easily installed and removed.
 Is easily installed and removed.
 Quiet and low maintenance.
 There is only one demerit we find with the V-belts and that is the V-belts will slip and
creep where synchronous speeds are required.

Disadvantage:
 The v-belt drive cant be used with larger center distances.
 The v-belt are not so durable as flat belts.
 The construction of pulleys for v-belts is more complicated than pulleys for flat belts.
 The centrifugal tension prevents the use of V-belts at speeds below 5m/s and above
50m/s.

Differences:
 A flat belt drive involves only one belt. Most industrial V-belt drives consist of multiple
belts.
 Flat belt drive pulleys are not grooved, because friction does not involve any wedging
action of the belt within a tapered groove. Belt sides or edges take no part in power
transmission.
 A flat belt drive must include some means of keeping the belt from sliding edgewise off
the pulley, a provision not required in the V-belt drive because the grooves maintain belt
position.
 Initial tension in a flat belt remains essentially unchanged once the belt is "run in."
Although flat belt materials do experience some elongation under tension, the amount is
minimal compared to the far more elastic V-belt.

Conclusion:
In view of all advantages and disadvantages of V belt and Flat belt it can easily be said that
v- belt if far more better than flat belt.
