Com 2 - Lab: Pulse Amplitude Modulation: Wesleyan University-Philippines Mabini Extension, Cabanatuan City

This document describes an experiment on pulse amplitude modulation (PAM) performed by students. They constructed a circuit using a transistor, square wave generator, and sine wave generator. They applied a 250 kHz square wave and 4 kHz sine wave to the circuit and observed the output on an oscilloscope. They found that the square wave amplitude needed to be near the sine wave amplitude of 3.62 V for full modulation to occur. The document discusses the objectives, circuit, generator wave parameters, materials used, schematic diagram, observations, and conclusion that PAM encodes information by varying the amplitude of a carrier signal.

I. OBJECTIVES

 To further understand what Pulse Amplitude Modulation is, and to

understand how PAM works, and its properties.

 To Perform Pulse Amplitude Modulation using simple circuits

II. DISCUSSION

1.) We need to construct the circuit shown below, using transistor, square wave

generator, and a sine wave generator. Here shown below the simulation of

the circuit.

2.) We must measure now the Function generator waves that we will use, first

shown below is the square wave that we will use. Having 250khz and a 1V

amplitude, we must vary the amplitude (will explain it later)

3.) Then we need a 4khz sine wave that must be near to the amplitude of the

square wave here we have a 3.62V, we don’t have an extra function

generator available in the lab but we can use the De Lorenzo module to have

us a Sine wave from the F – Tone Generator.

4.) Using the circuit that we already construct, we apply this waves to the end of

each resistors just like in the simulation before, and we attach their

respective grounds to the common ground. Connect the oscilloscope probe to

the Collector of the transistor. Here below is the Pulse Amplitude

Modulation using a transistor, sine, and square waves

5.) Here are the parameters of each wave, we vary the voltage of the square

wave because it seems that the 1v amplituide is not enough for the 3.62

amplitude of the Sine wave, so it must be near or 3ish for it to happen.

III. MATERIALS

 2n222A NPN transistor

 2 pcs of 1k ohm resistor ¼ W

 Jumper Wires

 Oscilloscope

 Function Generator that can generate (Sine and Square waves)

IV. SCHEMATIC DIAGRAM

V. OBSERVATION

We observe that the square wave was modulated in the sine wave wherein the

amplitude must be consider in the process of modulating them if the amplitude is

not enough then only half of the wave will modulated.

VI. CONCLUSION

Therefore we conclude that the Pulse Amplitude Modulation is a process where

our info (square wave) is encoded to the Amplitude of the carrier signal (Sine

Wave).
