INTRODUCTION

With the vast development of man’s technology, the great improvement of home

appliances also has been brought to the fullest level. However, most people in our country only

have access to manually operated appliances. And because of this, there are some certain

reports concerning about people experiencing, some old-aged and physically disabled people, in

finding difficulty in operating these appliances. But somehow, over a few decades, in this study,

the researchers hope to develop and remote controlled fan and lighting system to lessen the

burden in operating home appliances. Therefore, allowing reducing human efforts; and indeed

saves – time, percent, accident caused by electrics shocks and by using this, perhaps, our

expectations would meet beyond our standards. It is cheap but with many uses. But if is

applied in a house it would be expensive because rooms are occupied with fan and lights. This

research is reliable because it enables persons with disabilities to operate fan and light devices

at a distance but when an objects or a barrier block the infrared light it could causes certain

difficulties. Nevertheless, this device is very easy to build and can be assembled on a general

purpose.

Deepali Sikerwar (2018), in his article, states that in today’s busy world, every person

wishes to reduce human effort. Nowadays, automatic systems are being preferred over manual

system to make life simpler and easier in all aspects.. Remote Controlled automation uses IR

sensors to control home appliances using a TV/DVD/VCD remote. Home appliances like fan,

light, radio, cooler, music system, home theatres, etc, can be turned ON/OFF using a remote.

Remote Controlled home automation is expected to work in a range of 10 meters without

barriers/walls in between. The IR rays transmitted by the TV remote control will be received by

IR receiver installed in the circuit.

18

Neaz Morshed (2015), in his study, stated that automation is a system that plays a

significant role in the ubiquitous economics. Engineers combat to consolidate automated

devices with functional instruments to make complicated systems for a fast expanding range of

applications and human activities. This paper represents a low cost, flexible and standalone

home automation system. We can control home appliances from outdoor also from

indoor locations. We have used a PIR (Passive Infrared Sensor) in this system that detects an

intruder. All Electrical loads are automated in this system.

Aren Jose (2017), states that the concept of home automation has been around since

the late 1970s. But with the advancement of technology and services, people’s expectation of

what a home should do or how the services should be provided and accessed at home has

changed a lot during the course of time, and so has the idea of home automation systems. If

we look at different home automation systems over time, they have always tried to provide

efficient, convenient, and safe ways for home inhabitants to access their homes. Irrespective of

the change in user expectations, advancement of technology, or change of time, the role of a

home automation system has remained the same.

Vaishnavi Gunge (2016), in his study, states that automation is a technique, method,

or system of operating or controlling a process by electronic devices with reducing human

involvement to a minimum. The fundamental of building an automation system for an office or

home is increasing day-by-day with numerous benefits. Industrialist and researchers are

working to build efficient and affordability automatic systems to monitor and control different

machines like lights, fans, AC based on the requirement. Automation makes not only an

efficient but also an economical use of the electricity and water and reduces much of the

wastage.
19

Dr. Joyanta Kumar Roy (2014), in her article, stated that in our day to day life, we

use various gadgets such as television, set top box, air conditioners, home theater, DVD player

and many other remote operated devices for comfort and happiness. Different gadgets

mean maintaining different remote controls which are not only clumsy but also difficult to

manage. Universal remote control simplifies our life because it helps us control any IR devices

like TV, air conditioner, home theater including lights and fans. But, because of many

technological complexities, it becomes difficult to build a single IR based universal remote

which can control all available IR based electronic gadgets from different manufacturers.

Therefore, a simple mobile phone cannot be used directly to control any such appliances. Some

special hardware is required to turn a mobile phone into a universal remote capable of

controlling the IR based home appliances. Automation of the surrounding environment of a

modern human being allows increased work efficiency and comfort. There has been a

significant development in the area of an individual’s routine tasks and those that can be

automated. So, many workers are trying to implement universal remote using smart mobile as a

part of Home Automation System.

Ankur Gupta (2005), in his study, stated that the objective of the project is to build a

system for controlling intensity/speed of electrical lights and fans using a TV remote or serial

port interface. The system follows a linear profile, provides regulation against input power

supply and also takes into account the frequency variation of the power supply. Intensity/speed

of the load is controlled by changing the RMS voltage using triac circuitry and changing the

corresponding firing angle.

Bassam Ruwaida, Toni Minkkien (2013), in their study, stated that this project

revolves around creating a home automation system prototype with the main focus being the

ability to lock/unlock a door through the internet. The system consists of a central device, a
20

server and an Android application. The central device is a microprocessor, in this case, a

Raspberry Pi that connects to the Internet and receives an order to control a motor which in

turn turns the lock with the help of gears. The ability to rotate the motor in both directions is

achieved by the use of an H-bridge. The server manages users and devices, and handles the

communication between the application and the central device. Users and devices are stored in

a database on the server. The application is a frontend which presents the user with a list of

devices to interact with .The main prototype where the Raspberry Pi acted as a central device

was abandoned due to time and resource constraints. It was instead used to control the motor

directly. This brought up some problems concerning powering the device using batteries. The

software of the prototype is mostly working but due to the same time limitations not all planned

features could be implemented.

Chintha Rajender, Benny Pears, Varsha Devi, B. Sanjai Prasad (2017) stated that

today, electronics is used in home appliances for wide purposes including the motor regulation

of a washing machine, the control of a vacuum cleaner, the light dimming of a lamp or the

heating in a coffee machine, etc. Within this evolution, the microcontrollers (MCU) progressively

replace analog controllers and discrete solutions even in low cost applications. They are more

flexible, often need less components and provide faster time to market. With an analog IC, the

designer is limited to a fixed function frozen inside the device. Remote control facilitates variety

of operation around the home or office from a distance such as fan regulators and mains power

supply. It provides a system that is easy to understand and also to operate, a system that

would be cheap and affordable, reliable and easy to maintain the system of remote control and

offers long durability. It adds more comfort to everyday living by removing the inconvenience of

having to move around to operate a fan regulator.

21

Anshu Jain, Sandeep Gupta, Durga Prasad (2006), in their study, stated that the

objective of their design project is to build a system for controlling light intensity of an

electrical bulb or speed of fan using a TV remote or using serial port interface. The

system provides regulation against input power supply. In their study, intensity/speed of the

load is controlled by changing the RMS voltage across the load using triac circuitry that

is by changing the corresponding firing angle at the gate of the triac. An ADC circuit monitors

the unregulated input voltage, followed by software to check for voltage variation and

provide regulation.

OBJECTIVES

This research aims to construct an IR remote controlled fan and lighting system for

Home Automated Appliances with the use of manually built in remote control.

Specifically, the study aims to achieve the following objectives:

First, construct an IR remote controlled fan and lighting system for home automated

appliances. To see the results, test the functionality of the device, test if it’s easy to control or

manipulate, test the range or how far can the remote cover, test its responsiveness, and test its

validity.
22

HYPOTHESIS

The IR remote controlled fan and lighting system will be effective and will help in

controlling appliances easier.

SCOPE AND DELIMITATION

This study focuses on finding solutions in operating certain devices in each house

especially for persons with disabilities. This involves a more precise version on having a Home

Automated Systems.

This research can be fully applied on a house if you have that amount of money to be

paid but this study only shows a single sample for others to understand the concept.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

This study is deemed significant to the following:

Society: The society may use this research for it is very significant in living and everyday life.

This will lessen the burden on work and is useful because of the benefits it could give if it is

used.

Offices: This will also contribute to offices because the hardship of the employees will lessen.

Thus, it will be easier for them to do tasks, especially when controlling devices of appliances

matter.

Families: This will benefit families a lot because it is made easy to control, with its relation to

more appliances. It will also be a very helpful tool because it will contribute to the conservation
23

of energy. They can use it without being hesitant to control and press buttons on the Remote

Control.

Youth: Because Youth nowadays really want high technologies, this device will suit their

standards. It is handy and portable that means even though they are staying in someone house

for a meantime, they can still control and operate some simple appliances that particular house

and can make them feel as if they’re in their home.

Future Research: This research maybe used as a basis for further studies on IR remote

control for Home Automated Appliances.

24

METHODOLOGY

Since the study aims to construct an IR remote control for Home Automated

Appliances, the single group design under experimental design is the most appropriate

research design to use. The single group design in which a group of subjects are

administered a treatment and then measured or observed. It involves a single treatment

with more levels. It aims to show the effectiveness of the IR remote control and the

correct connection of wires to generate home appliances, specifically, light and fan and

also measures its capacity to work on a distant place.

The researchers tested the functionality of the device by allotting distances, from 1 to 15
meters. In the said test, it showed that the remote can still function and both the light and fan
worked at a distance of 1 to 13 meters. But, it can't work when it is at a distance of 14-15
meters.

CONCLUSION

The researchers conclude that the device is working or functioning well. The device

works at a distance of approximately 13 meters. However, if there’s a barrier or an object that

blocks the IR sensor, it could not work. Nevertheless, the overall performance of the device is

somewhat good. Though, it may need some improvement and changes as the respondents

suggested.

Table 2. Table for testing the range As the

respondents

suggested that our research device should have their own circuits for light and fan, buttons

should be labelled for it to know what will be used and that the device should have a more

attractive frame for it to be seen very catchy to other researchers. They also suggested that
33

each button in the remote control should have a corresponding function to manipulate a specific

appliance. For ex, 1 is for lights, 2 is for fans, etc. Moreover, the researchers are seeking which

appliances can also be automated through this system.
