INTRODUCTION
Telecom Industry is for sure one of the fastest developing industry in the world.
After the boost in IT technologies, the world of communications has changed
significantly. In the conditions of strong competition telecom operators face new
challenges: how to save existing customer in “wild hunt” for new ones? How to
increase ARPU, at the same time providing client with the newest services for
lower price? How to guarantee uniqueness and highest quality of the service? How
to increase efficiency of business processes within the company? Operational
support systems (OSS) were developed to answer most of the questions that bother
modern telecom operator. Automation of IT-resources management provides
operators with opportunity to cut the expanses and develops bases for successful
business initiatives. Organization-wide integration of people, information,
business-processes and resources increases company’s capability to react promptly
on market changes, what gives an operator competitive advantage. Increase in
labor productivity of employees also gives an opportunity to reduce expenses and
receive maximum revenue. Similarly continuous evolution of telecom networks
makes efficient management of network resources extremely important for the
Telco businesses.
Efficient resource utilization is mandatory while heading to success in
the modern market of telecom services. Leveraging the current network
infrastructure by using Inventory Management System means maximizing
revenues, minimizing expenditures and improving service quality.
There has been incessant increase in bandwidth availability and
reduction in its cost at the same time. This has resulted in an ever-increasing list of
services that are being offered to the customers. This is primarily because the
Service Providers have realized that it is more profitable to provide value-added
services rather than just providing the underlying infrastructure. The focus of
service providers has now shifted from infrastructure to services. With the
evolution of technology and network, new business models like revenue sharing,
managed services, sharing resource and virtual service the provider complexity
evolved, of further increasing OSS/BSS/NMS. Providers have found out new
means of revenue generation for e.g. by providing QoS, Service Level Agreements
etc. These revenue streams have been more cost effective, as there is minimal
investment in the customization of the Operation Support Systems (OSS)/Business
Support Systems (BSS) deployed to support such revenue streams. This change in
focus has made a great impact on the (Network/Business) operation conducted by
these services providers.
Market Overview
Analyst firm OSS Observer believes that global OSS spending will grow from $13
billion in 2005 to $18.7 billion in 2010 at a 7 percent CAGR. They also forecast
that the $5.7 billion mobile OSS segment will grow to $9.5 billion in 2010 at an 11
percent CAGR (much faster than wire line’s 4 percent growth). The growth is
driven by increased investments in data services, increased competition in Europe
and North America , wide scale UMTS deployments, and a focus on the customer
experience.
Worldwide service fulfillment spending is forecast to grow from
USD2.17 billion in 2008 to USD3.16 billion in 2013, which represents a CAGR of
8%. Growth in the service fulfillment market is projected to be less affected by the
economic downturn during 2009–2010 than the markets for OSSs that are judged
to be non-revenue-related. Growth will continue in 2011 at rates close to the 2007
growth rates, driven by the need to fulfill increasingly complex service bundles for
communications service providers (CSPs) in mature markets, and by the
competitive growth and maturation of CSPs in emerging markets – especially in
the mobile and residential broadband segments.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
This section describes the research methodology that will be adopted to achieve the
objectives of the study. It includes the scope of the study, research design,
collection of data, analysis of data and limitations of the study.

RESEARCH DESIGN
The research to be conducted will be of exploratory type.
Also called formulative research studies, the emphasis of this study would be on
the discovery of ideas and insights. This type of research has been chosen because
it would provide enough flexibility and provide opportunity for considering the
different aspects of a problem under study. This flexibility would allow me to
transform the initially broadly defined research problem into a more precise one
during the course of the study. Hence, it would allow necessary changes in the
research procedure.
DATA COLLECTION
The concerned study would mainly involve collection of data from secondary sources. Most of
data would be collected from internet, books, journals and other publications. An analysis of the
various previous researches on the subject would be done.
This method of data collection is being chosen as it is an easier and more convenient method and
saves a lot of time. Certain interviews might be conducted and schedules/questionnaires prepared
during the course of study if required and if sufficient time and funds are available.

DATA ANALYSIS TOOLS

The tools and methods of data analysis will be decided during the course of the study.
