MTL-108 (Introduction to Statistics)


Second Semester 2018-2019

Course Content

Probability: Definition, axioms, conditional probability, total probability.

Random Variables: Discrete, continuous and mixed random variables, probability mass, probability density
and cumulative distribution functions, mathematical expectation, moment generating function, Chebyshevs
inequality, Weak Law of Large Numbers.

Special Random Variables: binomial, geometric, negative binomial, Poisson, continuous uniform, normal,
lognormal, exponential, gamma, beta, Weibull, etc.

Sampling Distributions: The Central Limit Theorem, sample mean and sample variance for a normal
population, Chi-Square, t and F distributions

Estimation: Unbiasedness, consistency, the method of Moments, method of Maximum Likelihood Estima-
tion, confidence intervals for parameters in one sample and two sample problems of normal populations.

Testing of Hypotheses: Null and alternative hypotheses, the critical and acceptance regions, two types
of error, power of a test, Neyman Pearson lemma, testing the equality of means, testing the equality of
variance.

Simple Linear Regression, least square estimators, standard error, regression through the origin.
