II. INTRODUCTION:
Earthquakes are natural phenomenon, which occur all of a sudden without any warning sometimes
resulting in loss of lives and property. Significant part of our population lives under a threat of
damaging earthquakes particularly in high seismic zone.
The awareness about the science of earthquakes, earthquake safety measures and disaster mitigation
among the people residing in the earthquake prone area is less in a developing country like
Philippines.
Seismologists study earthquakes by going out and looking at the damage caused by the earthquakes
and its magnitude by using seismograph. A seismograph is a machine that records seismic waves
which is produced by a seismogram. A seismogram is a paper record of the seismic waves the
seismograph received. Seismographs have a weighted pen suspended from a stationary frame. A
drum of paper is attached to the ground. As the ground shakes in an earthquake, the pen remains
stationary but the drum moves beneath it. This creates the squiggly lines that make up a seismogram.
By studying the seismogram, the seismologist can tell how far away the earthquake was and how
strong it was. This record doesn't tell the seismologist exactly where the epicenter was, just that the
earthquake happened so many miles or kilometers away from that seismograph.
