ACTION RESEARCH PROPOSAL
I. ABSTRACT
related to health care, food intake, with underlying socioeconomic and cultural factors.
Investing in the nutrition of children has the power to trigger huge social and economic changes
in countries. With the right nutrients and care early on in life, a child’s brain and body are able to
A body can’t grow without proper nutrition. Muscles need protein, bones and teeth need
calcium, a child’s brain needs healthy fats and cells require various vitamins and minerals to
function. Eating a variety of foods from all the food groups ensures that your child can grow and
School feeding programs have been defined by the World Bank as “targeted social safety
nets that provide both educational and health benefits to the most vulnerable children, thereby
increasing enrollment rates, reducing absenteeism, and improving food security at the household
level.” Beyond improvements in access to food, school feeding programs also have a positive
impact on nutritional status, gender equity, and educational status, each of which contributes to
As the researcher of this research, I have found out that out of 392 students from
Kindergarten to Grade 6 for S.Y. 2015-2016 of Tiring Central Elementary School, 55 pupils
were wasted and 11 pupils were severely wasted. I am hoping through the school based feeding
1. What is the level of the nutritional status of the pupils before the feeding program?
2. What is the level of the nutritional status of the pupils after the feeding program
rendered?
3. Can the feeding program help improve or elevate the nutritional status of undernourished
In the Child Nutrition Act of 1966 it was stated that educational progress was an
objective of the United States School Feeding programs. In spite of this fact no serious attempt
has ever been made to evaluate whether this objective has been met; the few evaluations that
have been conducted lack scientific rigor. As a whole the studies fail to provide a strong basis
from which to make valid inferences regarding the long-term effects of the feeding program on
school achievement and adaptation. Studies that have focused on the short-term effects of hunger
or morning feeding suggest that the provision of breakfast may both benefit the student
emotionally and enhance his capacity to work on school type tasks. (E Pollitt, M Gersovitz,

IV. METHODOLOGY
SAMPLING
Purposive sampling was employed in selecting pupils-respondent of the study. The Kindergarten
to Grade 6 pupils was weighed last July 2015 to have their initial weight and out of 392
respondents, 55 wasted and 11 severely wasted pupils were noted.
INSTRUMENTS
In this investigation the Department of Education, through the Health Nutrition Center,
implemented the School-Based Feeding Program for S.Y. 2015-2016 to address the under
nutrition and short-term hunger among public school children.
TIME FRAME
The study will start July 2015 and the feeding will start September 2015 and will run daily in the
PROCEDURE
1. Last July 2015 the 392 students of Tiring Central Elementary School from Kindergarten
2. Out of 392 pupils, there were 55 wasted and 11 severely wasted groups noted.
3. Daily feeding will be given during lunch time for 120 days to the undernourished groups.
4. Quarterly weigh-in will be observed until March 2015, to supervise the improvement of
5. On March 2015 the last weigh-in will be conducted to assess the nutritional status of the
66 undernourished pupils.
INTERVENTION
The action research is to determine the effectiveness of the school based feeding program
to rehabilitate the nutritional status of the 66 undernourished pupils of Tiring Central Elementary
S.Y. 2015-2016.
