BACKGROUND
This document provides customer guidance for configuring the Bicom Systems PBXWare
software to properly interface to and interoperate with the Integra Telecom SIP Solutions
trunks. The PBXWare software is a graphical front-end to an Asterisk PBX; running on a Linux
server.

The goal of this document is to ensure that—when properly configured—the subject customer
supplied equipment will interface to and operate with the Integra Telecom equipment and
network.

In order to establish a configuration and compatibility baseline, Table 1 below shows the
software versions used for testing and evaluation in the Integra Telecom Lab. Software
versions above (newer than) the tested version are typically regression tested by the
applicable vendor and generally considered to be acceptable as well.

CONFIGURATION
The generic IP PBX test configuration is shown in Figure 1 below. This configuration ensures
proper SIP call handling between the customer-supplied IP PBX platform (PBXWare software in
this case) and the Integra Telecom equipment and network.

Note that some ‘schools of thought’ like to consider everything outside of or beyond the IP PBX itself to be part of the PSTN. For this
configuration document, the beginning of the PSTN does not matter; as ‘in to’ and ‘out of’ the IP PBX are the more important
considerations.

INSTALL WIZARD
Following a new installation of PBXWare on a Linux operating system machine, an initial
system setup wizard is launched upon first web browser connection. At this time, the Integra
Telecom SIP Solutions trunk information may be configured. The steps below walk alongside
the setup wizard process. This process uses the web browser of choice. Specifics of the
connectivity are outlined in the PBXWare documentation supplied with the system.

Quick Launch: http://ipaddress_of_PBXWare:81 (Port 81)

Note that some steps involve provisioning the internal extensions of the Asterisk PBX. While
noted, these screens in the wizard are not part of the SIP Solutions provisioning requirements.

 Step 1: End User License Agreement — Please review the 4,158 word “PBXware
End User License Agreement (EULA).” If acceptable, enter “I agree” (capitalization
matters) in the text box field.

Press Confirm.

 Step 2: Administrator Details — Enter and confirm an e-mail address and password
in the appropriate text box fields. Note that these are the credentials necessary for
logging in to administer the PBXWare system. It is important to know this information
for later use in this document.

Press Next.

 Step 3: Server Details — Enter and confirm an Asterisk server Root level password in
the appropriate text box fields. Going forward, the PBXWare software front end will use
these credentials to access the underlying Asterisk PBX.

Select the appropriate Time Zone from the drop down menus.

Enter a Host Name and Server Name in the appropriate text box fields. These may be
the same data fill. The Server Name field is used as the „name‟ of the underlying
Asterisk PBX. It is possible for PBXWare to front end multiple Asterisk PBX
deployments (servers).

If the Linux server has a single network interface, the Interface field will be grayed out
and unavailable for selection. This is shown below. Otherwise, select the appropriate
Ethernet interface from the drop down menu list.

It is highly recommended (just short of mandatory) that the Use DHCP field be set to
“No” as the PBX should use a static IP address in the majority of deployments.
Therefore, the customer-assigned, private IP (LAN) entries must be made for: IP
Address, Netmask, and DNS Server. The Gateway text box field is the private IP
address of the Integra provided SIP proxy device. Typically, this data fill will be:
192.168.1.1. Integra Telecom will provide this information on a per-customer basis.

Finally, the customer decides if the PBXWare server will act as a DHCP server for the
connected telephone and soft phone clients. Typically, another customer supplied
DHCP server already resides on the LAN. If so, select the “No” radio button.

Press Next.

 Step 4: Licensing — Enter the License Number in the appropriate text box field. It is
assumed that the free (demo) version of the PBXWare software is not being used.

Press Next.

 Step 5: Locality — Enter the proper information in the appropriate text box fields and
select the proper items from the drop town menus. The Number of Digits field is the
internal PBX dial plan as determined by the customer. The available values are 2-16
digits for internal extensions. For this configuration, “4” was selected. Note that once
selected, this value cannot be changed. Choose wisely!

Press Next.

 Step 6: Music on Hold — Music on Hold is outside the scope of this document.
However, a radio button selection must be made in order to proceed.

Press Next.

 Step 7: UADs — It is possible to allow the PBXWare server to „discover‟ existing User
Agent Devices (UADs) or telephones on the customer LAN. If desired, enter the Start
IP address and End IP address values for the existing UADs and Press Start.

Otherwise, Press Skip.

Press OK.

 Step 8: Trunk — A default extension destination must be configured for incoming

calls. Based on the numbering plan selected in Step 5, this field will be automatically
populated by the setup wizard. The customer may accept this value, change it now, or
change it later.

Press Next.

 Step 9: Confirm — This is actually a two-step process of reviewing and submitting the
configurations and provisioning performed in all the above steps. This is the „point of
no return‟ on some parameters: while others may be changed at will. It is important to
review the information presented before proceeding. If all looks well, Press Confirm
and finalize.

In a few minutes the PBXWare system will begin to step through the configuration
process. This takes a few additional minutes to complete. Errors will be displayed with a
red „X‟ character.

Press Finish.

This step completes and concludes with set up wizard provisioning of the PBXWare
server software. The web browser will now automatically redirect to the PBXWare login
page as shown in the following section.

ADDITIONAL PROVISIONING
The PBXWare setup wizard primarily configures the server portion of the PBX deployment. In
order to provision the underlying Asterisk PBX to interoperate with Integra Telecom‟s SIP
Solutions trunks, additional steps must be completed. The following steps are presented in the
order accomplished with a fresh system deployment.

Again, for completion of these steps, use the web browser of choice. Connectivity is outlined
in the PBXWare documentation supplied with the system.

Quick Launch: http://ipaddress_of_PBXWare

 Step 1: Security Warning — When the setup wizard completes, the web browser is
automatically redirected to the PBXWare login page. A certificate authority warning is
typically displayed by the web browser. Therefore, it is necessary to manually proceed
to the login page. In this example, the screen shot below is from Google Chrome.

Press “Proceed anyway” or equivalent (on the selected web browser) to proceed to
the PBXWare login page.

 Step 2: PBXWare Login — The login credentials provisioned in setup wizard Step 2
are now used to log into the PBXWare system. Enter the E-mail address and password
previously selected.

Press Login.

The above values are the same as those entered for the Provider provisioned in Step 5
above. Thus, these will not override the provider defaults.

There are two fields in the above screen shot that need additional clarity.

1. Register: Select “With authname@host” in the drop down menu. This is the
fifth entry in the list of valid options. It is difficult to see in the drop down menu
list and on the screen shot.
2. Incoming IP Addresses: Enter the private IP address of the Integra provided
SIP proxy device (where inbound calls transit). Typically, this data fill will be:
“192.168.1.1”. Integra Telecom will provide this information on a per-
customer basis.

Press Save.

Sidebar: Most fields in the server configuration are set to default values or filled in by
the previous provisioning steps. However, the Absolute Timeout field requires customer
attention. This is the maximum length of calls to and from the PBX. The default value in
the text box field is 2 hours or 7,200 seconds. If longer calls are desired, this value must
be changed. In this example, the value of “14400” seconds was entered.

 Step 17 (Optional): Add DID (b) — Select Advanced Options. In the Trunk field,
select the trunk name provisioned in Step 11 above from the drop down menu list. In
this example, select “IntegraTrunk” for the Integra Telecom SIP Solutions trunk.

1. For a single DID number, enter the singular value in the DID/channel (start) field
text box. Select the “No” radio button for Range. The data fill for Destination (drop
down menu) and Value (text box) fields are based on customer determined
requirements. Finally, the E.164 number (start) text box MUST contain the same
data fill as the DID/channel (start) field text box.

or

2. For a DID range (multiple DIDs to a single destination), enter the first value in the
DID/channel (start) field text box. Select the “Yes” radio button for Range. Enter
the last value in the DID/channel (end) field text box. The data fill for Destination
(drop down menu) and Value (text box) fields are based on customer determined
requirements. Finally, the E.164 number (start) and E.164 number (end) text boxes
MUST contain the same data fill as the DID/channel (start) and DID/channel (end)
field text boxes.

Press Save.

Note: In the event that the basic options DID page is used to configure a single DID with
appropriate destination, a cryptic error message window pops up as shown below.

Although there is no E.164 field shown on the basic options page, the data fill is still
required. It is necessary to select “Advanced Options” and data fill the E.164 number
(start) text box. The error message seems to indicate that an E.146 formatted number
must be provisioned in DID/channel (start) field text box. That is not the case.

This is a known PBXWare bug. That does not make it less confusing or annoying,
however.

 Step 18 (Optional): Reload PBXWare — After the DID configuration steps are
completed, reload the PBXWare system. Using the left side menu, navigate to Settings
