Assignment 1 Linear Algebra

This document contains 5 questions as part of a Linear Algebra assignment. Students are asked to: 1) Find the rank of 3 matrices. 2) Use Gauss-Jordan elimination to find the inverse of a given matrix. 3) Show that a given matrix is not invertible and multiply it by a vector. 4) Show that a given set of points is not a vector subspace. 5) Determine if a vector is in the span of given vectors and if other vectors span R3. Assignment No. 1

Linear Algebra

Session (2018 – 2022)

Deadline for submission: 1st April, 2019

1. Find the rank of the following (6)

𝟏 𝟐 𝟐 𝟒 𝟔 𝟐 𝟒 𝟐 𝟐 𝟑
A= [𝟏 𝟐 𝟑 𝟔 𝟗], B = [𝟎 𝟒 𝟒 ] and C= [𝟏 𝟎]
𝟎 𝟎 𝟏 𝟐 𝟑 𝟎 𝟖 𝟖 𝟎 𝟏

2. Use Gauss – Jordan method to find the inverse of (3)

𝟐 𝟏 𝟏
𝑨 = [ 𝟒 −𝟔 𝟎]
−𝟐 𝟕 𝟐
Note: Gauss – Jordan method uses the technique as follows:
𝟐 𝟏 𝟏 𝟏 𝟎 𝟎
[𝑨 𝒆𝟏 𝒆𝟐 𝒆𝟑] = [ 𝟒 −𝟔 𝟎 𝟎 𝟏 𝟎]
−𝟐 𝟕 𝟐 𝟎 𝟎 𝟏
Apply row operations such that inverse matrix is in place of I matrix and I
matrix in place of matrix A.

3. Show that A= 4*eye(4) –ones (4) is not invertible. Multiply A*ones (4,1). (5)
where eye(n) = In. ones(n) = a matrix with each entry =1.
4. Show that the set H of all points in Ṟ2 of the form (3s,2+5s) is not a vector sub-
space. (2)
𝟏 𝟐 𝟒 𝟑
5. Let v1= [ 𝟎 ], v2= [𝟏], and v3=[𝟐] and w=[𝟏]. (4)
−𝟏 𝟑 𝟔 𝟐
a. Is w in {𝒗𝟏, 𝒗𝟐, 𝒗𝟑} ?
b. Do v1, v2, v3 span Ṟ3.
