Statistics Minor Question Paper

This document appears to be a mid-term exam for a probability and statistics course containing 4 questions. Question 1 asks how many families out of 400 would be expected to have 2 or 3 boys. Question 2 asks for the approximate probability of getting six heads x times in 6400 coin tosses using a poisson distribution. Question 3 asks how many soldiers in a regiment of 1000 would be expected to be over 6 feet tall given data on mean height, variance, and normal distribution probabilities. Question 4 has two parts, with part a asking to find the other two observations in a series of 7 given the mean, variance, and 5 observations, and part b asking to check if two events are independent given probabilities of each event and their

MID-TERM EXAMINATION | 2015

PROBABILITY AND STATISTICS
TIME : 1 HR Maximum Marks : 20
Attempt all the questions. Each question carries 5 marks.

1. Out of 400 families with 5 children each. How many would you
expect to have either 2 or 3 boys?

2. Six coins are tossed 6400 times. Using poisson distribution what
is the approximate probability of getting six heads ‘x’ times?

3. Assume that mean height of soldiers to be 68.22 inches with a

variance of 10.8 inch2. How many soldiers in a regiment of 1000
would you expect to be over 6 feet tall? Given that the area under
the standard normal curve between z=0 and z=0.35 is 0.1368 and
between z=0 and z=1.15 is 0.3746.

4. (a) In a series of 7 observations, the mean and variance are 8 and

16. If five observations are 2, 4, 10, 12, 14 find the other two.

(b) P(A) = 0.75, P(B)= 0.50 and P(AUB)= 0.87, check whether the
events are independent
