Assignment Analysis 1

This document contains 22 problems related to analysis and properties of real numbers. The problems cover topics such as sets and operations on sets, inequalities, neighborhoods, limits, bounded sets, and completeness properties of real numbers. Justification is required by referring to appropriate properties or theorems.

Tutorials – Analysis I

(Section 1)

(1) If A is a set with m elements and B is a set with n elements and if A ∩ B = ∅ then
show that A ∪ B has m + n elements.

(2) State and prove triangle inequality and show that:

| |a| − |b| | ≤ |a − b| for all a, b ∈ R.

(3) If a, b ∈ R, show that |a + b| = |a| + |b| if and only if a.b ≥ 0

(4) Let a, b, c be any elements of R.

(i) If a > b and b > c, then a > c.
(ii) If a > b, then a + c > b + c.
(iii) If a > b and c > 0, then ca > cb.

(5) Find all x that satisfy the inequality

4 < |x + 2| + |x − 1| < 5.

(6) Let a ∈ R, show that the intersection and union of any two neighbourhoods of a are
again a neighbourhoods of a.

(7) If y > 0, show that there exists n ∈ N such that

1/2n < y.

Justify each step by referring to an appropriate property or theorem.

(8) Let S be a bounded subset of R. For some scalar λ ∈ R, define λS = {λs : s ∈ S}. If
λ < 0, prove that

sup(λS) = λinf S and inf(λS) = λsup S.

(9) Define bounded below and bounded above sets. Give examples of the set which are:
(i) Bounded above but not bounded below.
(ii) Bounded below but not bounded above.
(iii) Neither bounded above nor bounded below.

(10) Show that there exist a positive real number x such that x2 = 2.

(11) Show that:

1
(i) sup{1 − n
: n ∈ N} = 1.
1
2

1
(ii) inf{1 + n
: n ∈ N} = 1.

(12) Let S be a nonempty subset of R that is bounded above, and let a be any number in
R. If a + S = {a + s : s ∈ S} then prove that:

sup(a + S) = a + sup S.

(13) Show that ’0’ is only limit point of the set {1/n : n ∈ N}.

(14) If S ⊆ R is a nonempty bounded set and I = [inf S, sup S], show that S ⊆ I. Moreover,
if J is any closed and bounded interval containing S, show that I ⊆ J.

(15) If x and y are two real numbers with 0 < x < y, then prove that there exists an irra-
tional number z such that x < z < y.

(16) State and prove the Density Theorem.

(17) Suppose A and B are two non-empty bounded subsets of R and

A + B = {a + b : a ∈ A, b ∈ B}.
Prove that:
sup(A + B) = sup A + sup B.
(18) (i) If x ∈ R, show that there exists n ∈ N such that

x < n.

(ii) Given any x ∈ R, show that there exists a unique n ∈ Z such that

n − 1 ≤ x < n.

(19) Define limit point of a set. Find limit points of [0, 1].

(20) Define limit point of a set in R. Determine the set of all limit points of the set of integers.

(21) State the Completeness Property of R. Show that if A and B are two non-empty bounded
subsets of R, then:

sup(A ∪ B) = sup{sup A, sup B}.

(22) Prove that a real number x is a limit point of the set S if and only if every neibourhood
of x contains infinite many distinct points of S.
