Homework 12: Ordinary Dierential Equations

Exer ise 1 : RHS-based te hnique

Solve the following DEs using the RHS (right-hand side)-based te hnique:
a) y ′ + 2y = x2 , b) y ′ + y = 2 sin x, ) y ′ − y = (x + 1)ex ,
d) y ′ + y = x − ex + cos x.

Exer ise 2 : Separable DEs

Show that the following ODEs are separable and determine the set of solutions of ea h.
a) 2xy + 6y + (x2 − 4)y ′ = 0, b) sin xdx + ydy = 0, ) dy
dx = 3+2y ,
2 cos(2x)

d) y ′ + y = x − ex + cos x.

Exer ise 3 : Te hnique of Variation of onstants

Solve the following ODEs using the te hnique of variations of onstants.

a) y ′ − (2x − x1 )y = 1 over ]0, +∞[, b) y ′ − 2xy = 3xex ,
2

) x 1 + (ln x)2 y ′ + 2(ln x)y = 1 over ]0, +∞[,

d) (x + 1)y ′ + xy = x2 with y(1) = 1 over ] − 1, +∞[, e) (sin x)y ′ − (cos x)y = x.

Exer ise 4 : Substitution Te hnique

Solve the following ODEs using the substitution te hnique.

a) y ′ = y ln(y) for y > 0 (using y = eu ), b) y ′′ − y = cos x (using u = y ′ ),
) The dierential equation given by y ′ + P (x)y = Q(x)y n , where P, Q are polynomials and n an
integer > 1, is alled Bernoulli equation. This equation is ommonly solved using the substitution
u = y 1−n for y 6= 0.
1) Determine the new DE of u, 2) Solve the DE y ′ + xy = xy 3 for y 6= 0.

Exer ise 5 : Half-life

The speed of radioa tive de ay of nu lei in a radio-a tive tissue is proportional to the number N (t) of
present nu lei in the tissue at an instant t.
1) Explain why N ′ (t) = −λN (t) for a ertain onstant λ > 0.
2) If N0 is the initial number of nu lei, give an expression of N (t),
3) We dene the so- alled " hara teristi time" τ as τ = 1/λ. Give the equation of the tangent line
(T) to the urve (C) of N (t) with respe t to t at t = 0. Draw the urve (C) and the tangent line (T).
4) Determine an expression of the so- alled "half-life period" τ1/2 whi h refers to the time of de ay of
half of the number of nu lei N0 . Give an expression of N (t) as fun tion of N0 and τ1/2 .
