Image Processing Lecture 1 - Introduction

The document discusses key steps and concepts in digital image processing. It describes how a digital image is represented by a matrix of pixels and defines different image types. It also outlines several main components of an image processing system including image acquisition, sampling and quantization, spatial and intensity resolution, neighborhoods and adjacency of pixels, and distance measures. The document provides an overview of fundamental digital image processing concepts.

Digital Image
• A digital image can be represented by a two dimensional matrix f(x,y)
consisting of M columns and N rows, where the intersection between a
column and a row is called a pixel (the smallest element of an image)
whose value represents intensity at that particular location.

Sampling and Quantization
• Sampling corresponds to discretization of spatial co-ordinates(x axis).

• Quantization corresponds to discretization of intensity values (y axis-

amplitude).
