Experiment - Three Hinge Arch

1. The document describes an experiment to determine the horizontal thrust of a three-hinge parabolic arch through experimental and theoretical methods. 2. The apparatus includes a support frame, arch assembly, simple supports, roller support, set of loads, and measuring tools. 3. The theory section provides the equation to calculate theoretical horizontal thrust based on load, load position, and arch radius. 4. The procedure describes setting up the load cell, taking readings at increasing loads in different positions, and comparing experimental and theoretical values.

EXPERIMENT 6: THREE HINGE ARCH

OBJECTIVE

1. To determine on the horizontal thrust of the three hinge parabolic arch by experimental and
theoretical method.
2. To determine the relationship between horizontal thrust and applied load.
3. To observe the effect of the load position on the horizontal thrust of the three hinge parabolic
arch.

APPARATUS

The apparatus comprise of:

1. Support frame
2. Three hinge arch assembly
3. A simple supports
4. A roller support
5. A set of load (weight)
6. Ruler / Measuring tape

THEORY

For the theoretical calculations, the equation to determine the horizontal thrust, HA is given by;
HA = Wa / 2r
Where;
L is the total length between the supports
r is the height of the arch
W is the load applied
a is the distance between the support and the load applied

PROCEDURE

1. Connect the load cell the digital indicator.

2. Switch on the indicator. For stability of the reading the indicator must be switch on 10 minutes
before taking the reading.
3. Place a load hanger at the location of the load to be applied.
4. Set the indicator reading to zero. Note the indicator reading.
5. Place the load on the load hanger.
6. Record the indicator reading. It represents the horizontal thrust of the pinned support.
7. Increase the load on the load hanger and record the horizontal thrust.
8. Repeat the step 7 for another 4 load increments.
9. Repeat the experiment for another 5 set of readings.
10. Calculate the theoretical horizontal thrust.
11. Tabulate the result in the data sheet given.

1. Complete Table 1 data for experimental and theoretical data of the horizontal thrust.
2. Calculate the percentage error between theoretical and experimental results.
3. From the data in Table 1, plot the graph of horizontal thrust for experimental and theoretical
versus load. Draw the best-fit curve through the plotted points.

CONCLUSION

1. From the experiment, state the relationship between applied load and horizontal thrust at the
support.
2. Compare the horizontal thrust of the load position and load applied at pinned support between
experimental and theoretical.
3. Describe briefly the effect of the load position and load applied of the horizontal thrust at pinned
support.
4. Verify that the moment at the crown is zero.
5. Comment on the accuracy of the experiment results.
6. State the possible factors that affect the accuracy of the results and steps to be taken to overcome
it.
