Design Method :

The design method is based on the Allowable Stress Design using the Simplified Concrete Capacity (CC) method

1.1 Allowable Stress Design (ASD)

In allowable stress design (ASD), the allowable load or resistance of the anchors are derived from full scale

testing, calculations, and/or experience.

The allowable load is determined by taking the average ultimate load and dividing by a safety factor (Ω)

T ultimate V ultimate
T allowable = ; V allowable =
Ω Ω
Where T = Tension Load ; V = Shear Load

The Designer must size the anchor such that the service load does not exceed the allowable load for an anchor

Tension service (T service) ≤ Tension allowable (T allowable)

Shear service (V service) ≤ Shear allowable (V allowable)

1.2 Simplified Concrete Capacity (CC) Method

In the concrete capacity method of anchor design, the following factors are considered:

a. parameters that influenced the load bearing behavior of anchors . The most important of these are the concrete

strength, the spacing to adjacent anchors and to the free structural component edges

b. direction of the acting load, whether it is tension load, shear load or combined tension and shear load.

c. mode of failure of the anchor. The most important of these are steel failure, concrete cone failure and concrete

edge failure.

1.2.1 Allowable or Recommended Tensile Resistance of an Anchor

The allowable or recommended tensile resistance of a single anchor is the lower of:

a. Tension based on steel strength

b. Tension based on concrete cone failure

1.2.2 Allowable or Recommended Shear Resistance of an Anchor

The allowable or recommended shear resistance of a single anchor is the lower of:

a. Shear based on steel strength

b. Shear based on concrete edge failure

Wedge Anchor

1.2.3 Combined Allowable or Recommended Tensile and Shear Resistance of an Anchor

For anchors subjected to simultaneous tension and shear loading, the following equation must be satisfied:

T service V service
+ ≤ 1
T allowable V allowable

2.0 Tensile Resistance Design

The recommended tensile resistance of a single anchor is the lower of:

a. Recommended tensile resistance of steel

b. Recommended concrete cone resistance

Size M6 M8 M10 M12 M16 M20

Recommended Tensile TRec,s [kN] 4.7 8.7 12.0 20.0 30.0 47.5

2.2 Recommended Concrete Cone Resistance

The recommended concrete cone resistance is based on the basic recommended tensile resistance of the anchor

and adjusted for all applicable design parameters for the anchor such as concrete strength, spacing and edge distance.

Thus, we have
TRec,c = ToRec ,c . fb . fs1 . fs2 . fc1 . fc2

where

ToRec,c is the basic recommended tensile resistance with no influence of spacing and edge distance
fb is the influencing factor due to concrete strength

fs is the influencing factor due to reduced spacing between anchors

fc is the influencing factor due to reduced distance of anchors from the edge of the concrete component
