"Smart Sericulture System Using Iot": Submitted by

This document proposes a smart sericulture system using IoT to automate silk farm conditions. Key objectives are to maintain optimum temperature, humidity, and other conditions for silkworms through different growth stages. Sensors will monitor conditions and an IoT server will analyze data, control farm actuators like fans/lights, and notify farmers if needed. The system aims to increase silk production quality and quantity by precisely regulating the farm environment with minimal manual labor.

INTRODUCTION
Sericulture (silk production) is a major occupation of rural community. Producing about 15%
share of the world silk produce, India is the 2nd largest silk producer after China whose total
produce amounts to a staggering 80%. Analysis of sericulture practices in India shows a clear
need of automation especially during pre-cocoon stages. The silkworms undergo crucial
bodily changes that determine the quality as well as quantity of the silk produce, during this
phase. Maintenance of optimum values of abiotic factors, like temperature, humidity etc. thus
yields a dramatic change in quantity and quality of silk produce. An Intelligent Sericulture
plant automation system, using zone-based cascade control of physical parameters can be one
of the solutions. Currently, such systems for pre-cocoon stages are purely manual, crude, and
lack intelligence. The system comprises of a data acquisition sub-system corresponding to the
predetermined zones for the rearing unit, an intelligent master controller facility, data
repository of past corrective actions, and cheap actuators like fans, bulbs in the zones. The
master control facilitates the optimum corrective action and directs the decisions to the
identified actuator sub-system based on abiotic data obtained from the respective data
acquisition sub-system. The actuator sub-system achieves the corrective measures using the
actuators placed in that zone of the unit. A continuous real-time feedback facilitates accurate
and quick implementation of corrective steps. The system aims for increased quantity and
quality of silk which is determined by reeling factor, holding capacity, roughness of silk.
Also, the zone-based implementation decreases production and maintenance cost making it
suitable for rural usage.

This is time to take initiative to reduce gap between technology and agriculture as we see the
pace of change in each respective fields are not in acceptable proportion. We felt that
Sericulture is one area where lot of improvement can be easily done. Currently the
productivity rate is very low in Sericulture as it is reported around 40%. Also a lot of
Sericulture farmers gets affected because of this. Climatic condition is the main reason for the
death of silk worms and hence low production of silk. This only inspired us to come up with
a solution to contribute in this domain.
OBJECTIVES
Our solution maintains the climatic condition inside the Silk Farm at optimum level that is
required for silkworm at each phase of its life automatically and sends the notification to the
farmers in case if any action needs to be taken.

This project provides a complete protection to the farm and every process has undergone
development with the help of electrical and electronics components. It facilitates farmers by
adoption of automation in temperature and moisture control using sensors. The growth of
silkworm involves three stages. These stages require different temperature and moisture
level. This is established with the help of temperature and moisture sensors and micro
controller linked to server through IOT. Various processes like protection and medical safety
for silkworm are provided by automation through this project. This will provide the farmers
with good efficiency.

WORKING
We have the smart IoT device that is installed in the Silk Farm and that keeps sending the
atmospheric condition details like the temperature, moisture, humidity, light etc. to the server.
The server on receiving the data samples can do the analysis and then notify the farmer in
case any action is required. The threshold values for optimum level range are configurable
on the server. We configure sensors with a IoT compatible board like YUN and then it is
connected to server where the process is done and the processed results will then sent to
control the farm. The IoT Server will also initiate a notification to farmer if required.

CONCLUSIONS
The proposed system aims to automate the silkworm maintaining system leaving only supervisory
work for manual labor.
