Power Point Presentation (The very hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle). Flashcards. Worksheets.
Mystery box and plastic and fake food. Strips of construction paper, glue, markers.
Warm up:
The teacher will start the class by asking: What day is it today? Is it Saturday? Is it Sunday? Is it
Monday? And so on till Thursday (the first class will be on Thursday) and what day will be
tomorrow? So they revise the whole week because this vocabulary will be in the story.
Lateron, the teacher will pre teach vocabulary present in the story by using the mystery box. (A
box painted black in the inside and covered with construction paper in the outside, there is a
hole in the center of the box so children can put their fists in and out, taking objects hidden
from inside the box). When presenting this activity the teacher will play a song, “The Mystery
box song”.
♫ Mystery box, mystery box. What's inside the mystery box? [Holding up the mystery box and
looking at it questioningly, showing children that the teacher also wonders what is inside.]
Mystery box, mystery box. What's inside the mystery box?
Mystery box, mystery box. What's inside the mystery box?
Mystery box, mystery box. What's inside the mystery box? ♫
Inside the box there will be plastic fruit and some other fake food. Children put their fists inside
and pick up an item trying to guess what the object is.
After each child has guessed one item the teacher will present a set of flashcard, one for each
object, sticking the flashcards on the board. While doing so She will ask: what colour is this?
Development:
The teacher will show a power point presentation with The Very Hungry Caterpillar story,
reading and making sounds when necessary.
After reading the story the teacher will provide a worksheet with some exercises to reinforce
vocabulary. The first exercise in the worksheet will be a matching exercise where children will
have to match words with the corresponding picture. In the second exercise they will have to
draw the food they like best and complete at the bottom of the page the phrase “I like…”
(while they draw the teacher will play the song I’m hungry, children know this song from
previous classes, since this song has some vocabulary they already know, it’s possible that they
choose from those words to draw in exercise 2).
Depending on how long it takes them to finish the activities the teacher will present a second
worksheet with 3 more exercises (one to complete the missing letter and guess the word, one
where they find words in a box and one where they order the days of the week)
Next, the teacher will explain they will play a game, presenting a set of cards that they will have
to rearrange in order to have the correct sequence of the story (each will have their own set of
cards). The first one to get the sequence right will win.
Round up
Art work: They will create they own caterpillar with very little materials, for this the teacher will
bring to class:

doesn't have to be exact.

Accordion fold the paper (see the diagrams below)
Continue until you've folded the entire thing and tape the end
