“Can you imagine that the doctor saying to you that you have been
diagnosed a lung cancer due to smoking but you actually did not smoke ever in your
life ?”. Correspondingly, this is the situation that other people have been through this
incident that might swear that the person did not smoke at all in their life but have been
told that he or she has a lung cancer. According to the Deputy Minister of Health, Datuk
Seri Hilmi Yahya said that The Ministry of Health views serious smoking amongst the
people as the number of smokers aged 15 and above is now recorded at 4.7 million
people. This problem is very worrying towards the society especially the sparks of issue
that have been raised all over the people which are about the relevance of the government
clearly seen that we have to aware the vitality of preserving health among the society
which the prohibition of smoking in public places should be supported and be enacted as
a law to all citizens to abide due to these points which are people who smoke in public
portray a bad example, safeguards the second-hand smoker and promote healthier
lifestyle.
Firstly, people who smoke in public places portray a bad example. Due to
the fact that, teenagers, as well as children, are regularly seen that as the figure that
usually can be influenced easily. They will follow what the other people do because they
think that action might be accepted as a morality in public and not been prevented by the
people on the surrounding. Besides, they imitate the people around them because at first,
they cannot differentiate this action between right or immoral. Therefore, they perceive
the actions as the manner or way things should be. There is a quotation that said “monkey
see monkey do”, which tells us that the people will follow the actions of other people as
they see it in daily lives as a habit and regular practice. They follow this actions because
they think it will uphold their life as “cool” of ways of life due to imitating the adults who
smoke in public places. The teenagers think that smoking will make them be an adult and
mature compared to other teenagers that not commit this actions. According to the report
from The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) stated that nearly 9 out of
10 cigarette smokers first tried smoking by age 18, and 99% first tried smoking by age 26.
Thus, the rationale of the prohibition of smoking in public places must be accepted
because the teenagers can easily portray other people which give as a bad example in life.
Next, if smoking is prohibited in public places it safeguards the life of the other
people which also being forced to inhale the smoke from the primary smoker which in
harms children, teenagers and adults, and the only way to protect second-hand smoker or
non smokers is to eliminate smoking and prohibit it in public places. According to the
Public Healthcare Physician from Health Department of Selangor, Dr. Norli Binti Abdul
Jabbar stated that 60% of the non-smokers of Malaysia mostly children and women are
