Jesus The Messiah
A Few of the more than 300 references to the Messiah that were fulfilled in Jesus.
T
o establish his Messiahship, the New Testament writers appealed to two areas of Christ’s life. One was the
resurrection. The other was how Jesus fulfilled messianic prophesy. There are more than 300 references to
the coming Messiah in the Old Testament. I have included 24 prophecy pairs with the text taken from the
New International Version of the Bible.
The Old Testament was written over a 1,500 year period and was completed by 450 B.C. The mostly
Hebrew language Old Testament was translated into Greek by the Jews of the Dispersion in 250 B.C. Many of
the Old Testament references are clearly messianic, while others are known to be messianic by two means: Either
they are directly quoted in the New Testament or are plainly stated as to fulfill Scripture, or the historical Jewish
sources, all pre-dating Jesus’ birth, regarded them as messianic. We must keep in mind that the Old Testament
was written in a particular historical context so that every passage, including messianic prophecies, first had an
immediate, historical meaning in the time in which it was written and second, in the case of messianic prophecy,
a prophetic element that was to ultimately to be fulfilled in Jesus. It is incredible that hundreds of years before
Jesus birth, God was bringing to pass his redemption plan in the words.
Luke 24:44-48 He said to them, “This is what I told you while I was still with
you: Everything must be fulfilled that is written about me in the Law of Moses, the
Prophets and the Psalms.” Then he opened their minds so they could understand
the Scriptures. He told them, “This is what is written: The Christ will suffer and
rise from the dead on the third day,and repentance and forgiveness of sins will be
preached in his name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. You are witnesses
of these things.
Acts 10:43 All the prophets testify about him that everyone who believes in him
receives forgiveness of sins through his name.
All the references quoted below were fulfilled in Jesus Christ and they establish a wonderful con-
firmation of Jesusʼ credentials as the promised Messiah. Makes you think. Gives you pause.

come for me one who will be ruler over Israel, whose origins are from of old, from ancient times. ”

D
id you ever notice that Mary and Joseph didn't get to name their son? God named
their son for them. He gave them the name he wanted to for the the Messiah. As you
dig into it, you wonder if for centuries God thought in his mind, “What shall I call the
Savior of the World?” Then, he said, “Jesus.” The word Jesus means, “Jehovah saves” or “The
Lord of Salvation.” I think God chose that name for four reasons:
1. Jesus is an easy name. It's five letters and two syllables. A one-year-old can't say
his own name, but he can say the name Jesus. Jesus in any language, sounds awe-
some.
2. Jesus is an enduring name. There's no name that's better known in the history
of the world.
3. Jesus is an exalted name. Philippians 2:9 says, "Therefore, God exalted Jesus to
the highest place and gave him the name that's above every name."
4. Jesus is an exclusive name. When the angels instructed Joseph before the baby
was born, he said “You shall call his name Jesus. For he will save his people from
their sins. “
Acts 4:12
Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under Heaven given to people by which we
must be saved.
Max Lucado says, “2000 years ago, the all powerful God, the one who specialized in taking that
which is common and making it spectacular, the all powerful God who took a rod and parted the
sea, the all powerful God who took a pebble and killed a giant, the all powerful God who spoke the
universe into existence, said to his angels, " It's time for me to show them my love, and in order to
show my love, I'm going to have to set aside my power.”
He loved us so much that he was willing to become a helpless, powerless baby in a man-
ger. Wow. Now that is something to think about. —Pastor
