use of computers in solving chemical engineering

• Solving linear and nonlinear equations in Excel
using the Goal seek and the Solver
• Applying Excel’s equation solving capability in
chemical engineering problems –
• In equations of state
• In equations in vapour–liquid equilibrium
• in chemical reaction equilibrium
• in mass balances with recycle streams.

• Cell references in Excel
• Creation of charts in Excel – Bar chart, pie chart, line graphs, scatter diagrams, etc
• Engineering plots in Excel, log-log plots and semi-log plots, chart modifications in
excel (titling, axes naming, etc)

• WEEK 4:
• Curve fitting and regression in Excel – fitting trendline to data, slope, R2 values, etc
• Numerical integration & differentiation, solving ordinary differential equations solving
partial differential equations.
• WEEK5: HYSYS: getting started, thermodynamics, flowsheeting;
• WEEK 6: Reactions, simulating unit operations and simulation of chemical processes.
• WEEK 7: MATLAB Interact, Encoding Matrices, Description of the MATLAB
Workspace, Variables Used for Complex Numbers, Operations on Matrices.
• WEEK 8: MID-SEMESTER EXAMS

• WEEK 9: Graphing in MATLAB, Additional Notes on
Matrices, Loop and Decision in MATLAB, MATLAB m-files.
• WEEK 10: The MATLAB Diary, MATLAB Toolboxes,
Rundown of Frequently-Used MATLAB Commands.
• WEEK 11: Use MATLAB to: solve problems in chemical
engineering;
• WEEK12: Simulate chemical processes; Prepare reports
based on MATLAB
• WEEK13: Use of MAPLE for chemical engineering
calculations

• Several tutorial and practice questions that would also be
discussed in class will be given out to further help the
students’ understanding of the topics discussed.

f. Structure of the Programme/Method of Grading


• Continuous Assessment: This includes:
• Tests/Assignments – 15%
• Mid Semester Test – 15%

• Examination Final Semester Examination – 70%

g. Ground Rules & Regulations
• Each student must come to class with his or her laptop.
• Separate notebook for the course
• Lateness to lectures and absenteeism will not condoned
• Noise making and all acts of distractions not allowed
• The “75% attendance” rule for eligibility to take the exam will be
STRICTLYLY ENFORCED.

• Assignments by way of further reading/practice on some selected
topics to help students’ understanding of the course is encouraged.

• The course is relevant as it will equip the student

are confronted with.
