Assignment 2

This document contains an assignment on distillation with 3 questions. Question 1 involves designing a continuous fractionating column to separate a benzene-toluene mixture and calculating moles of overhead and bottom products and number of plates. Question 2 involves rectifying a heptane-ethyl benzene mixture and calculating distillate, bottoms, number of trays, and feed tray. Question 3 involves calculating distillate, bottoms, minimum reflux ratio, and minimum number of plates for a benzene-toluene distillation.

ERT 313/4 – BIOSEPARATION ENGINEERING

ASSIGNMENT 2 – DISTILLATION

Date line: 6th August 2008 (Put in the ERT 313 pigeon hole)
Maximum marks for late submission is 50 % of the lowest mark of the submitted
assignment.

QUESTION 1

A continuous fractionating column is to be designed to separate 30,000 kg/h of a mixture

of 40 percent benzene and 60 percent toluene into an overhead product containing 97
percent benzene and a bottom product containing 98 percent toluene. These percentages
are by weight. A reflux ratio of 3.5 mol to 1 mol of product is to be used. The equilibrium
data is shown in Table 11.1-1. The feed has a boiling point of 95°C at a pressure of 1 atm.
(MW of benzene and toluene are 78 and 90 g/mol, respectively).

(a) Calculate the moles of overhead product and bottom product per hour.
(b) Determine the number of ideal plates and the position of the feed plate if the feed
is at its dew point (saturated vapor).
QUESTION 2

Rectification of a Heptane - Ethyl Benzene Mixture.

A saturated liquid feed of 200 mol/h at the boiling point containing 42 mol % heptane and
58% ethyl benzene is to be fractionated at 101.32 kPa abs to give a distillate containing
97 mol % heptane and a bottoms containing 1.1 mol % heptane. The reflux ratio used is
2.5:1. Calculate the mol/h distillate, mol/h bottoms, theoretical number of trays, and the
feed tray number. Equilibrium data are given below at 101.32 kPa abs pressure for the
mole fraction n-heptane xH and yH:

Ans. D = 85.3 mol/h, B = 114.7 mol/h, 9.5 trays + reboiler, feed on tray 6 from top
QUESTION 3

Minimum Reflux Ratio and Total Reflux in Rectification

A liquid mixture of benzene - toluene is to be distilled in a fractionating tower at 101.3

kPa pressure. The feed of 100 kg mol/h is liquid, containing 45 mol % benzene and 55
mol % toluene, and enters at 327.6 K. A distillate containing 95 mol % benzene and 5
mol % toluene and a bottoms containing 10 mol % benzene and 90 mol % toluene are to
be obtained. The reflux ratio is 4:1. The average heat capacity of the feed is 159 kJ/kg
mol . K and the average latent heat 32099 kJ/kg mol). Equilibrium data for this system
are given in Table 11.1-1. Calculate:
a) kg moles per hour distillate,
b) kg moles per hour bottoms,
c) minimum reflux ratio Rm
d) Minimum number of theoretical plates at total reflux

Ans. D = 41.18 kg mol/h, B = 58.8 kg mol/h, Rm = 1.17, Minimum number of theoretical

plates = 4.8 plus a reboiler
