MATH 133 Tutorial 2 Winter 2019

1. For each of the following systems of equations, write down the augmented matrix
and determine its rank. Does the system have a unique solution, no solution, or
infinitely many solutions? If there is a unique solution, then what is it? If there
are infinitely many solutions, express them in parametric form.

1
x + y − 2 z = 1

(a) −2y − 2z = 0

2y + x + 12 z = 2

10x1 + 100x3 = 70

(b) x2 − 50x3 = −3

5x1 + 55x3 = 35

2. The following system of equations is homogeneous, thus it has the trivial solution
(x = y = z = w = 0). Is this solution unique? If not, then this system necessarily
has infinitely many solutions! If this is the case, express the solutions in parametric
form, and then write down a set of basic solutions.

 x + y − 2z + w = 0

x + 3y − 6z = 0

 2y − 4z − w = 0

x − y + 2z + 2w = 0

3. For which real value(s) of a does the system

x + y − az = 1

2x + ay + az = 2

x + y + az = 1

have (i) a unique solution, (ii) no solution, (iii) infinitely many solutions?
For each value of a, what is the rank of the augmented matrix?
