Introduction
This assignment contains four parts: design, data and queries, derived data and an
evaluation. All parts of the assessment relate to the Bywater Services scenario below.

Scenario
Bywater Services is a corporate events management company based in the city of Leeds
in the UK. The company organizes corporate events such as fund raising dinners,
conventions, sale conferences and product exhibitions. All events are commissioned by
customers and all events are categorised by type.

An event is scheduled for a particular start date. An event may last from half a day to a
week, or more. There should also be an end date for an event. Events take place at
particular venues – some venues are used many times for different sorts of events.
Venues should have information recorded about their facilities and equipment available.

All events have one or more staff members allocated by Bywater Services. All staff
members are classified by type.

A particular event will have a running order of activities that could include presentations,
lectures, parties and seminars. These activities could include external personnel such as
guest speakers. Guest speakers and other personnel can undertake work for more than
one company, university or other organisations. A record of these organisations, and their
associated personnel should also be kept..

A particular event will also have items of literature and gifts given out on the day. These
include agendas, brochures and badges. A record is kept of this along with which printer
produces these items. Some items are printed by Bywater Services themselves and are
designated as ‘in-house’.

Note: The data shown in the assignment is not necessarily normalised – it is your task to
organise the data in the most optimal way possible. For example, the paper records shown
below will not necessarily map directly to database tables. You are expected to use these
tables as a starting point for your own normalisation and optimisation of the Bywater
Services data.

You should show all SQL scripts along with their results.

Task 1 – Design (40 Marks)
a) Produce an entity relationship model for the proposed database system for Bywater
Services. This should be a fully normalised model to third normal form (3NF). You do
not have to show the steps you took in the normalisation process.
b) Produce a data dictionary for the entity relationship model.

Task 2 – Data and Queries (32 Marks)

a) Create all the tables using SQL. Show your Create scripts and the finished tables.
b) Produce data on all the events, activities, personnel, customers and event types. Give
a listing of this.
c) Produce data for venues and literature/gifts listed in the examples included in the
scenario. You should associate these with events. Give a listing of this.
d) Produce data on the equipment and staff shown in the scenario. You should associate
these with events. Give a listing of this.
e) Write a query that selects all the events and which staff types have worked on them.
f) Write a query that selects the events and their venues.
g) Write a query that selects all the customers and their events, including staff and
equipment
h) Write a query that shows an event and a full schedule of all the activities for that event
including: dates and times, literature/gifts, personnel.

Task 3 – Derived Data (13 Marks)

The company have said they would like to extend the database to include costing
information. All events will have staff costs by staff type allocated to them. All venues will
have their rental costs included. Fee payments to external personnel involved in activities
also needs to be included. The price of production of literature and gifts will also be a
factor. Discuss how you would derive data for a report that showed all the relevant data for
a production, including the staff costs and venue costs. You should include an outline of
how you would derive it using SQL and specify the method of implementing it.

Task 4 – Evaluation (15 Marks)

Give an evaluation of how the work you have done has met the requirements of Bywater
Services. This should include data storage and applications. You should also discuss how
you have standardised the company’s data.

Submission requirements
 Your submission should be in the form of a single word-processed document that
includes any necessary diagrams.
 The word count for the document is 1250 words (excluding text in any diagrams). You
should explain any assumptions you have made.
 A digital version must be submitted on a CD, USB flash drive or other similarly
acceptable medium, along with a copy of the developed database.
