Analysis of T-Beams PDF

Interior rectangular beams in reinforced concrete construction act as T-beams, where the concrete slab and beam act as a single structural component. Due to the non-uniform distribution of compressive stresses, an effective slab width is used to calculate compressive forces. The effective width is the smallest of 1/4 the beam span, the beam width plus 16 times the slab thickness, or the beam width plus half the clear spacing to the next web.

ANALYSIS OF T-BEAM SECTIONS

In reinforced concrete construction, due to the monolithic construction of slabs and beams
(concrete floor system) the rectangular beams together with the concrete slab act as a single
structural component. Due to the presence of floor slab, interior rectangular beams act as T-
beams while exterior beams act like inverted L-beams.

Effective Flange Width
Due to the non-uniform distribution of compressive forces in T-beams, the maximum
compressive stress is assumed to act over an effective slab (flange) width. The effective
width is determined such that the compressive force obtained by multiplying the maximum
compressive stress by the effective width is equal to the resultant force of the actual
compressive stress distribution.

The effective width of slab that contributes to the rectangular concrete beam is the
smallest of the following: (NOTE: This are based on NSCP 2010)
For T-BEAM: For L-BEAM:
1. ¼ of the beam span 1. Width + 1/12 of the beam span
2. Width of the beam + 16 times the slab 2. Width of the beam + 6 times the slab
thickness thickness
3. Width of the beam + ½ clear spacing to the 3. Width of the beam + ½ clear spacing to the
