Voltage Drop Sample Calculation

This document provides calculations for voltage drop in electrical cables. It defines the key terms and formulas used to calculate voltage drop based on cable length, design current, and other factors. Tables show example calculations for various cable runs in an operational building and toll plaza, listing the cable size, calculated current, voltage drop percentage and ensuring it is below the permissible limit. In summary, this document outlines the methodology and provides examples for calculating voltage drop in electrical cable runs to ensure safe and code-compliant design.

VOLTAGE DROP CALCULATION

Voltage Drop calculation

Voltage Drop = (mV/A/m) x I x L

1000

Iz = Current Carrying capacity of a cable for continous service under the particular installation condition concerned
It = Tabulated current caring capacity of a cable found in Appendix 4 of BS 7671
Ib = Design Current
In = Circuit Breaker Rating
Ca = Rating factor for ambient temperature
Cg = Rating factor for grouping
Cs = Rating factor for thermal sensitivity of soil
Cd = Rating factor for depth of buried cable
Ci = Rating factor for conductors surrounded by thermal insulation
Cf = Rating factor applied when overload protection is being provided by an overcurrent device with a fuse factor greater than 1.45
Cc = Rating factor for buried circuits

Iz = It x Cg x Ca x Cs x Cd x Ci x Cf x Cc

For the protection against overload and short circuit

Iz ≥ In ≥Ib

It ≥ Iz
Cg x Ca x Cs x Cd x Cf x Cc

Assumptions:
0
Ambient temperature = 30 C Ca= 1
0
Ground Ambient temperature= 25 C Ca= 0.96
Thermal resistivity = 2.5K.m/W Cs= 1
Burried depth = 0.9m Cd= 0.98
Cg= 0.85/0.75
