Physics 71 - Problem Set #2: Chapter 3

The document provides the problems from Physics Problem Set #2 on chapter 3. It includes 5 practice problems about blocks on inclined planes and frictionless surfaces, masses being pulled by horizontal forces, a stone being whirled in a horizontal circle, and a car negotiating a banked curve. Students are instructed to show their work and box their final answers.

Physics 71 - Problem Set #2: Chapter 3

General Directions: Solve each problem carefully on a yellow paper. Write your COMPLETE
solution. No solution. No credit even if your answer is correct. Box your final answers.

1. Three blocks on a frictionless surface are in

contact with each other as shown in the figure.
A force F is applied to the block A (mass mA)

(a) Draw the free body diagram for each block.

(b) Find the acceleration of the system in terms of
mA, mB and mC.
(c) Find the net force on each block.
(d) The force of contact that each block exerts on
its neighbor.

2. An 8.00 kg block and a 10.0-kg block connected

by a rope that passes over a frictionless peg slide
on frictionless incline as shown in the figure. Find:
(a) the acceleration of the blocks
(b) the tension in the rope

3. A 100.-kg mass is pulled along a frictionless

surface by a horizontal force such that its
acceleration is 6.00 m/s2. A 20.0-kg mass slides
along the top of the 100.-kg mass and has an
acceleration of 4.00 m/s2. (It thus slides
backward relative to the 100.-kg mass.)
(a)What is the frictional force exerted by the
100.-kg mass on the 20.0-kg mass?
(b)What is the net force acting on the 100.-kg
mass?
(c) What is the force F?
(d) After the 20.0-kg mass falls off the 100.-kg mass, what is the acceleration of the 100.-kg
mass?(Assume that the force F does not change.)

4. A 0.750-kg stone attached to a string is whirled in a horizontal circle of radius 0.350 m.

The string makes an angle of 30.0 with the vertical.
(a) Find the speed of the stone.
(b) Find the tension in the string.

5. A curve of radius 150. m is banked at an angle of 10.0 . An 800.-kg car negotiates the
curve at 85.0 km/h without skidding. Find
(a) the normal force on the tires exerted by the pavement,
(b) the frictional force exerted by the pavement on the tires of the car, and
(c) the minimum coefficient of static friction between the pavement and tires.
