    STANLEY That’s alright. Leave the bottle there. I might have another later.
    WAITER Bitte Schön.
    STANLEY Herr Ober?
    WAITER Bitte Schön?
    STANLEY Er – that man that was here just now – who is he?
    WAITER Wie bitte?
    STANLEY That man that called himself a Count – who is he?
    WAITER Ah, yes – The Count.
    STANLEY Is he a Pukka one?
    WAITER Bitte?
    STANLEY Is he a real Count?
    WAITER Aber-naturlich.
    STANLEY I don’t so know much about the “naturlich” There’s a lot of imposters about.
    WAITER (with respect – a rebuke). The count is from one of the best families from
    Austria, gnaädiger Herr.
    STANLEY Does he live here?
    WAITER In Vienna – yes.
    STANLEY I mean does he live in this hotel?
    WAITER Aber nein.
    STANLEY You mean he can’t run to it..
    WAITER Bitte?
    STANLEY You mean he can’t afford it
    WAITER Pardon?
    STANLEY Damn it all, man, is he rich or poor?
    WAITER Ich weiss nicht! Entschuldigen Sie bitte. I think I hear a client calls. (He bows
    and exits)
