Title: “RFID-based System for School Children Transportation Safety

Enhancement”
Introduction:

This paper presents a system to monitor pick-up/drop-off of school children to enhance

the safety of children during the daily transportation from and to school.
The system consists of a bus unit. The bus unit the system is used to detect when a child
boards or leaves the bus.
This information is communicated to the child’s parent by sending an sms on the mobile.
Children safety is of utmost importance to their parents. Despite the best safety measures,
children, due to their lack of skills to protect themselves, may end up in a situation that
endangers their life.
In this paper, we focus on a particular risk associated with the daily bus trip to and from
school.
There have been previous incidents where a child is forgotten in the bus and eventually
die because of suffocation.
This paper presents a system to monitor the daily bus pick-up/drop-off of children to
enhance the overall safety of the daily bus transportation to/from school.
The system aims at automatically detecting when a child boards or leaves the bus and
issue an alert message when a child does not board or leave the bus to reduce the parents’
concerns about using the bus for the daily transport of their children without being lost or
forgotten.
.

Problem statement:
The system should recognize each child and detect when every child boards or leaves the
bus.
The system should have a database to store student’s information.
The system should be easy to re-configure.
The communication should be reliable.

Literature Survey:
Bus Safety System for School Children Using RFID and SIM900 GSM MODEM
Abstract: Millions of children need to commute between homes to school every day.
Safer transportation of school children has been a critical issue as it is often observed that,
kids find themselves locked in the school bus at the bus stop after going to school, they
miss the bus, or ride the wrong bus with no way to track them. This project intends to find
yet another solution to solve this problem by developing a bus safety system that will
control the entry and exit of students from the buses through an energy efficient
methodology. The proposed system will control the entry and exit of students to and from
the bus using RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) and GSM technologies to ensure the
entering and exiting of all students to and from the school bus in a safer manner. The
process, does not require any additional action by the student and drivers. The system will
do all the process and allow the student to be tracked while entering and leaving the bus.
If the bus journey is successful from the source to destination, it will send an SMS to the
management to inform its departure and arrival.
RFID-GSM imparted School children Security System
Abstract: With the advancement of the crime rate security is having its alarming
significance for school children’s. The safety mechanism to the transportation bus and to
the children travelling from home to the school and resume back to home is a standalone
component to the parents and to the school management. This paper aims to provide the
total security for school children. Range and Obstacle detection and accident detected
sensors are implanted on the front surface of the bus in order to avoid collision with
another vehicle on the Road. Each student is tagged with unique code. Two counters used
at the entrance and exit location of the bus. Wireless communication technology (IEEE
802.4.15) is used to inform the status of the bus to the school principal. The absentee
record of the student will be send to the concerned parent before leaving the children
entry point. The return information is also informed to the parent using GSM technology.
The results are favorably good to meet the challenges of the security issues.
Proposed work: -

The system is divided into two main units: bus unit located inside the school bus, and a
school unit located inside the school. The bus unit is responsible for detecting the child
when he boards or leaves the bus and then this information is sent to the school unit. The
school unit is the central unit where it collects data from all the buses, adds them to the
system database, checks if there are missing children, and it sends a text message
notification to their parents.
The school unit consists of a server interfaced with GSM modem to receive data from the
bus. The server simultaneously acts as database server and web server to host the web-
application developed to manipulate the system setting, update, and query the system
database. In addition, the server communicates with an SMS gateway to send notification
in case a child is detected missing.
We are using a GPS module to track the location of the bus continuously using Android
app which will be installed in every parents mobile.
