Annotated Bibliography

My essay will talk about UTIs, specifically if home remedies can treat them. If they can’t

be treated what will happen? I will look into what works and what doesn’t and if there are

consequences for not just getting antibiotics to treat it. I will also look into who is most affected

by them.

Akgul, Turgay, and Tolga Karakan. “The Role of Probiotics in Women with Recurrent Urinary

Tract Infections.” Turkish Journal of Urology , 7 Sept. 2018,

eds.a.ebscohost.com/eds/pdfviewer/pdfviewer?vid=9&sid=ffdf9fcb-a282-4ae8-

b227-6c07dafaa196@sessionmgr4010.

This article by Turgay Akgul and Karakan Tolga talks about recurrent UTIs and

Probiotics. They say that probiotics could be used in place of antibiotics in treating a UTI. It also

talks about What probiotics are and how they relate to antibiotics. This article was written last

year and comes from the Sinclair Library. It was written in the Turkish Journal of Urology, so I

believe this to be a good and educational source. It’s main audience would be college students

and adults looking for information about what can help a UTI.

I would use this article to show that probiotics could be used to treat UTIs instead

of antibiotics. I would also show the similarities of the two.

Canadian Nursing Home. “Study and Expert Opinion Find Lack of Benefit of Cranberry in

Reducing UTIs among Older Women in Long-Term Care.” Sinclair College Off-

Campus Authentication Form, Health Media Inc, 1 Dec. 2016, eds-b-ebscohost-

com.sinclair.ohionet.org/eds/pdfviewer/pdfviewer?vid=4&sid=889ccf41-8771-

401b-b7ad-c23b5f992de9@pdc-v-sessmgr03.

The article by the Canadian Nursing Home talks about the effectiveness of

cranberry supplements on nursing home patients with UTIs. The Canadian Nursing home took

references from multiple doctors to put this article together. They did a study that had 185

elderly women take 2 cranberry supplements daily. They showed overall there was little

difference in how often and how many women were getting UTIs. This source is an academic

article and comes from the Sinclair Library.

The audience for this article is college students who are learning about UTIs and

Cranberry effectiveness. It is a fairly new article, it was written in 2016. I think they wrote this

article to show how ineffective Cranberry can be for elderly women fighting UTIs. A common

home remedy they tell you to use to treat UTI is cranberry.

I would use this article to show that cranberry may not be the most helpful

remedy to use for older women.

Farid, Huma. “More Water, Fewer UTIs?” Harvard Health Blog, Harvard Health Publishing, 18

Oct. 2018, www.health.harvard.edu/blog/more-water-fewer-utis-2018101515035.

The article written by Dr. Huma Farid talks about how drinking more water can

help prevent UTIs. They did a study on two groups of 140 premenopausal women. One group

drank there usual amount of water/fluids and the control group drank their usual fluids/water plus

1.5 of extra water. The women kept journals and their urine was tested for hydration status and

the volume was measured. It concluded that women who drank more water had less recurrent

UTIs. This article is for women to show them the benefits of drinking more water if they

recurrent UTIs. The article was written last year so it is pretty new.

I would use this article in my paper to show that water could be used as a remedy

to help prevent recurrent UTIs.

McIntosh, James. “Urinary Tract Infection: Causes, Symptoms, and Prevention.” Medical News

Today, MediLexicon International, 6 Nov. 2018,

www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/189953.php.

The article by James McIntosh explains what UTIs are, what causes them, and

how they can be treated. The article was written last year so all the facts are recent and it comes

from an academic site. The article was also reviewed by University of Illinois-Chicago, School

of Medicine which shows the article is credible. I believe the main audience of this site are

adults checking to see if they have a UTI and what they can do to help it.

I would use this article to explain what a UTI is and what to look for. I will also

use this to show ways to avoid a UTI and what you can do to prevent them.

Miller, Korin, and Korin Miller. “7 Kidney Infection Signs and Symptoms You Should Never

Ignore.” SELF, SELF, 13 Dec. 2017, www.self.com/story/3-signs-of-a-kidney-

infection-you-should-never-ignore.

This article is by Korin Miller. It breaks down 7 signs and symptoms of kidney

infections. This article is from a health magazine. Korin has an International Relations and

Marketing from The College of William & Mary and an M.A. in Interactive Journalism from

American University. She covers health articles for the magazine. It’s from 2017 so its recent and

these are still signs and symptoms you should look out for. This isn’t an academic article but it

can still give you information that could be useful. The target audience for this article is women

who read this magazine and who try to stay more active and healthy.

If left untreated UTIs can lead to all sorts of other health problems. A kidney

infection is one of those problems. I would use this article to show what can happen if a UTI is

left untreated and what to look for if you’ve left one untreated for a long time.

Rachael Link, MS, RD , Rachael. “6 Home Remedies for UTI (Urinary Tract Infection).”

Healthline, Healthline Media, 23 Apr. 2017, www.healthline.com/nutrition/uti-

different home remedy options than i haven’t seen in other articles. This article I feel is more

targeted towards adults who like to be educated about their health. It was written in 2017 and is

still accurate.

I would use this article to talk more about different home remedy option you can

use for UTI treatment.

Walker, Christopher. “One Easy Way To Prevent (and Get Rid Of) Urinary Tract Infections UTIs

For Women.” YouTube, YouTube, 28 July 2017, www.youtube.com/watch?

v=WvUtJtaX8oQ.

This is a video by Christopher Walker. It talks about an “easy step” that women

can use to prevent UTI. Christopher is a youtuber who posts videos all related to health and

giving health advice. He is a Neuroscientist with a degree from Duke. He’s trying to target

women in this article but I believe both men and women who are trying to be healthy will watch

his channel. He talks about healthy options you can use to treat UTIs without using antibiotics

and he mostly talks about a particular substance you can buy for treatment.

I would use this video to explain different things you can use to treat a UTI and

information about the product to compare it to other home remedies.
