Winter 2019
EEC 130B Homework #8
Due: 03/06/19 by 11:59pm (EEC130B Homework Box in Kemper 2131)

Problem 1: Parallel-plate waveguide modes.

Consider a parallel plate waveguide filled with a nonmagnetic medium with a

permittivity ε=9𝜀0 . The spacing between the plates is 10 cm.
What are the cutoff frequency and cutoff wavelength of the m=2 TE mode?
What are the cutoff frequency and cut off wavelength if the permittivity of the
filling material is increased to ε=16𝜀0 ? What is the propagation constant of the
TE2 mode at 1.5 GHz in each case?

Problem 2: dielectric waveguide modes.

How many modes exist in a dielectric waveguide that has the following
parameters? Index of refraction of the core n1 = 1.6, index of refraction of the
cladding n2 = 1.5, wavelength λ = 1.0μm, waveguide core thickness 2d = 4 μm.

Problem 3: TE2 mode in a dielectric slab waveguide.

Find the cutoff frequency for the TE2 mode in a dielectric slab waveguide with
ε=7𝜀0 and thickness 2 cm, which is embedded in another dielectric with ε=3𝜀0 .
Assume nonmagnetic case.

Problem 4: Millimeter-wave dielectric slab waveguide.

Consider a dielectric slab waveguide with 𝜀𝑑 =4𝜀0 and 𝜇𝑑 =𝜇0 surrounded by air to
be used to guide millimeter waves. Find the guide thickness d such that only the
TE1 mode can propagate at frequency up to 300GHz.

Problem 5: Power and loss for the TE parallel-plate mode.

Find average power transfer and conductor loss for a TE mode between parallel
planes to verify the expression for attenuation:
2𝑅𝑠 (𝑤𝑐 ⁄𝑤)2
(𝛼𝑐 )𝑇𝐸 =
𝜂𝑎√1 − (𝑤𝑐 ⁄𝑤)2

Problem 6:
The magnetic field of a particular mode in a parallel-plate air waveguide with a
plate separation of 2.5 cm is given by

where x and y are both in meters.

a. Classify the mode. Is it a propagating or a non-propagating mode?

b. What is the operating frequency?
c. Find the corresponding electric field.
d. Find the lowest-order similar mode (TEm or TMm) that does not propagate in this
waveguide at the same frequency.

Problem 7: Parallel-plate waveguide modes.

Problem 8: TE2 mode in a dielectric slab waveguide

Find the cutoff frequency for the TE2 mode in a dielectric slab waveguide with
ε=7𝜀0 and thickness 2 cm, which is embedded in another dielectric with ε=3𝜀0 .
Assume nonmagnetic case.
