This document only provides guidance for feature activation. Feature deployment and feature
gains depend on the specifics of the network scenario where the feature is deployed. To achieve
the desired gains, contact Huawei professional service engineers.
Software Interfaces
Any parameters, alarms, counters, or managed objects (MOs) described in Feature Parameter
Description documents apply only to the corresponding software release. For future software
releases, refer to the corresponding updated product documentation.
Trial Features
Trial features are features that are not yet ready for full commercial release for certain
reasons. For example, the industry chain (terminals/CN) may not be sufficiently compatible.
However, these features can still be used for testing purposes or commercial network trials.
Anyone who desires to use the trial features shall contact Huawei and enter into a
memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Huawei prior to an official application of such
trial features. Trial features are not for sale in the current version but customers may try them
for free.
Customers acknowledge and undertake that trial features may have a certain degree of risk
due to absence of commercial testing. Before using them, customers shall fully understand not
only the expected benefits of such trial features but also the possible impact they may exert on
the network. In addition, customers acknowledge and undertake that since trial features are
free, Huawei is not liable for any trial feature malfunctions or any losses incurred by using the
trial features. Huawei does not promise that problems with trial features will be resolved in
the current version. Huawei reserves the rights to convert trial features into commercial
features in later R/C versions. If trial features are converted into commercial features in a later
version, customers shall pay a licensing fee to obtain the relevant licenses prior to using the
said commercial features. If a customer fails to purchase such a license, the trial feature(s)
will be invalidated automatically when the product is upgraded.
3 Cell Management
3.1 Principles
3.1.1 Definition
Cell management refers to management of communications resources by establishing cells
and configuring related parameters.
3.1.2.1 Cell
A cell is an area where radio communications services are provided. It is the fundamental unit
of a radio network. Run the ADD NRCELL and ADD NRDUCELL commands to add cell
resources for NR networks. Coverage of the entire radio network is provided by cells.
3.1.2.2 Sector
A sector is an area covered by antennas. A sector is added by running the ADD SECTOR
command. Each sector uses one or more radio carriers to provide coverage. A sector can be
omnidirectional or directional, depending on the antenna type.
l Omnidirectional
An omnidirectional sector uses omnidirectional antennas to provide 360° coverage with
the antenna at the center. In light-traffic areas, the deployment of omnidirectional sectors
means fewer antennas need to be deployed, which reduces equipment cost.
l Directional
A directional sector uses directional antennas to provide coverage. Each directional
antenna covers a 60° or 120° sector area, depending on whether there are six or three
sectors configured on the gNodeB. The azimuth of each sector is slightly over 60 or 120
degrees in actual scenarios so that the sectors can overlap to ensure seamless coverage.
In heavy-traffic areas, the deployment of directional sectors supports more traffic
volume. Directional sectors allow for greater flexibility in area and sector planning.
3.1.2.4 RF Equipment
RF equipment is a set of RF processing units, such as remote radio units (RRUs) or active
antenna units (AAUs). RF equipment is added and associated with CPRI ports on baseband
processing units (BBPs) by running the ADD RRUCHAIN and ADD RRU commands.
If combination of RRUs in star topology applies to three SUL sectors, six CPRI ports are
required. If the baseband processing unit (BBP) cannot provide enough CPRI ports, cascading
networking or LNR CPRI MUX networking is an option. In cascading networking, the fiber
optic cable between two RRUs to be cascaded must be less than 100 m. Two combined RRUs
must be connected to the same BBP.
Multi-carrier sectors are used in densely populated areas where traffic increases rapidly, such
as exhibition centers, airport waiting areas, shopping malls, central business districts, and
high-end residential areas.
For details about carrier specifications, see RRU technical descriptions in 3900 & 5900 Series
Base Station Product Documentation.
For details about other parameters of a cell, see the corresponding feature documentation. For
example, for details about CPRI compression, see CPRI Compression.

3.1.4.2 NARFCN
The NARFCN, center frequency of the cell carrier, is used to determine the center frequency-
domain position of an NR DU cell. An NARFCN is classified into uplink NARFCN and
downlink NARFCN.
The uplink NARFCN must be configured for an SUL cell based on the network plan. It is
specified by NRDUCell.UlNarfcn. For non-SUL cells, whether to configure the uplink
NARFCN is based on the value of the NRDUCell.UlNarfcnConfigInd parameter.
0–3000 0.005 0 0
SUL SUL stands for supplementary uplink. SUL cells, which are
limited to uplink reception, support 2R and 4R.
NOTE
The cell must have the same TX/RX mode as the AAU/RRU.
If multiple cells are served by the same RRU or AAU, the sum of Pmax_out of these cells must
be less than or equal to the maximum transmit power of the RRU's or AAU's transmit
channel. Otherwise, ALM-29870 NR DU Cell TRP Unavailable is generated.
NOTE
l For details about the maximum transmit power of RRUs or AAUs when different quantities of
carriers are configured, see the following section in 3900 & 5900 Series Base Station Product
Documentation: 3900 & 5900 Series Base Station Technical Description > Typical Power
Configuration Reference for RF Modules.
l SUL cells involve only uplink transmission and therefore require no transmit power configurations.
3.2.1 Benefits
The primary function of gNodeBs is to provide radio cell coverage for UEs. Cell management
is mandatory.
3.2.2 Impacts
Network Impacts
None
Function Impacts
None
3.3 Requirements
3.3.1 Licenses
Cell establishment requires a valid capacity license. For details about capacity license control
items, see License Management.
3.3.2 Software
Prerequisite Functions
None
3.3.3 Hardware
Boards
Only the UBBPfw1 and UMPTe boards support this function. For details about the RATs
supported by boards, see BBU5900 Hardware Description in 3900 & 5900 Series Base
Station Product Documentation.
RF Modules
All NR-capable AAUs/RRUs/pRRUs support this function.
Common Cells
Requirements for setting up common cells are as follows:
l The hardware resources of BBPs, CPRI ports, and RF modules meet the cell
requirements before the cell is established. For the hardware requirements of macro base
stations, see the following section in 3900 & 5900 Series Base Station Product
Documentation: 3900 & 5900 Series Base Station Technical Description > Product
Specifications.
l The transmit/receive mode of the cell must match the number of transmit/receive
channels of the RF module or the cell will not work normally. For details about the
number of transmit/receive channels supported by RF modules, see the following
sections in 3900 & 5900 Series Base Station Product Documentation: 3900 & 5900
Series Base Station Technical Description > Product Specifications > Technical
Specifications of RRUs and Technical Specifications of AAUs.
l The CPRI data rates for the BBP optical modules must match the cell bandwidths and
transmit/receive modes when selecting optical modules for BBPs. For the constraints
between the CPRI data rates and the cell bandwidths and transmit/receive modes, see the
following section in 3900 & 5900 Series Base Station Product Documentation: 3900 &
5900 Series Base Station Technical Description > Product Specifications > Technical
Specifications of the BBU5900.
l Bandwidths of the cells served by the RRUs/AAUs must fall within the frequency bands
supported by the RRUs/AAUs.
l AAUs must be used to establish 32T32R or 64T64R cells.
l RRUs must support 8T8R to establish 8-antenna cells.
The following table describes extra requirements for configuring TDD cells.
l If TDD cells under a base station have different uplink-downlink slot configurations,
they must be bound to different BBPs. The uplink-downlink slot configurations of all
TDD cells on the same BBP must be the same.
l If TDD cells under a base station have different subcarrier spacing, they must be bound
to different BBPs. The subframe spacing of all TDD cells on the same BBP must be the
same.
l If TDD cells under a base station have different bandwidths, they must be bound to
different BBPs. The bandwidths of all TDD cells on the same BBP must be the same.
l If both eCPRI 64T64R TDD cells and CPRI 64T64R TDD cells are served by the same
base station, they must be bound to different BBPs. The RF module models of all TDD
cells on the same BBP must be the same.
l If TDD cells under a base station have different transmit/receive modes, they must be
bound to different BBPs. The transmit/receive modes of all TDD cells on the same BBP
must be the same.
Cells must be established on the BBP directly connected the RRU/AAU over the CPRI/eCPRI
optic fiber, and such cells must also be bound to this BBP, if required.
l The RRUs/AAUs must support multiple carriers. For details about RRUs/AAUs that
support multiple carriers, see the following section in 3900 & 5900 Series Base Station
Product Documentation: 3900 & 5900 Series Base Station Technical Description >
Product Specifications > Technical Specifications of RRUs or Technical
Specifications of AAUs.
l The frequency range of the two cells must be within the frequency bands supported by
the RRUs/AAUs.
l When two cells are configured for the same RF module, the bandwidths of the two cells
must be the same.
l The frequency range of the two cells cannot overlap.

Process
For details about how to configure device data, see 3900 & 5900 Series Base Station Initial
Configuration Guide in 3900 & 5900 Series Base Station Product Documentation.
NOTE
l The antenna transmit/receive mode must match the number of antennas in a sector. Accordingly, the
sector serving the cell must be configured with the required number of antennas (specified by the
SECTOR.ANTNUM parameter). For example, if a cell works in 8T8R mode, the
SECTOR.ANTNUM parameter must be set to 8.
l If the SECTOR.CREATESECTOREQM parameter under ADD SECTOR is set to TRUE, there is
no need to run the ADD SECTOREQM command. The SECTOR.CREATESECTOREQM
parameter is set to FALSE by default.
Uplink and downlink decoupling cells correspond to one NR cell and two NR DU cells.
