Summary Principles of Essay Writing I-VI

I. Principles of Essay Writing I : Selecting a Topic


Academic prose need evidence, that’s why usually it requires more than just one
paragraph. Each paragraph of an essay always have same form include a general
topic sentences with controlling ideas, added by facts, examples, physical
description, and experiences that describe the controlling ideas.
An essay has :
1) A beginning : Introduction (general information and thesis statement)
2) A thesis sentence : The most general and important sentence in the essay
3) A middle : Describe or explain the thesis sentence
4) An Ending : Conclusion
When you want to select a topic for your essay, you should do these process :
Write about what you know, identify your audience, decide what the purpose of the
essay, select an interesting topic. We have to narrow our topic, too.

II. Principles of Essay Writing II : Thesis Statement


Thesis statement : one sentence that contain the essay purpose
 It’s the clearest statement
 We put it in the beginning of the essay, in the end of the introduction
 We can’t just make it to be a simple statement and we can’t put it into question
 It contain controlling ideas
 It could be a statement of opinion or statement of intent.

III. Principles of Essay Writing III : Paragraph Relationship and Essay Outlining
In essay for academic purpose, the thesis statement is related to the topic sentence.
Here is diagram of Paragraph Relationship within an Essay
i. Introduction
Thesis: A B C (A B C are controlling ideas)
ii. Body Paragraph
Topic sentences A and followed by supporting sentences
iii. Body Paragraph
Topic sentences: B and followed by supporting sentences
iv. Body Paragraph
Topic sentences: C and followed by supporting sentences
v. Conclusion
Make an outline of our essay will help us to organize our ideas. It contains words
and phrases or maybe a complete sentence but we have to make the words and
phrases parallel.

IV. Principles of Essay Writing IV : The Introduction, Connecting Information, and


Writing the Introduction
 The purpose of the introduction are to give background information, to make it
interesting for the reader, and mention the thesis. The introduction consist hook,
connecting information, and thesis statement.
 How to write a hook : asking a question, make an interesting observation,
describing a unique scenario, use a famous quotes, and or using background
information.
 After the hook, write three to five sentences that will introduce the topic. It called
a connecting information.
 Here are some type of the introduction : move from general to spesific, use an
anecdote, use a quotation, ask a question, and present facts and statistic. We can
choose it depending on how we make the essay.

V. Principles of Essay Writing V : Writing the Body and Transistion Signals


between Paragraphs
The body of essay is three or four paragraph that will support the thesis statement.
When we write an essay, we have to show the relationship between one paragraph
to another one. It can be linked by using a transition signal.

VI. Principles of Essay Writing VI : Writing the Conclusion


 We can use some transitions to make a conclusion like : In conclusion..., To
summarize..., As we have seen..., or Finally....,
 The conclusion make the reader remember the main ideas that we put in the essay
and there are suggestion, opinion, prediction, or a conclusion in the final
sentence of an essay.

1. Why do we lie? (Page 170)
The fact is that we lie for many reasons.
2. Education in The East and The West (Page 164)
I have seen several areas in which education in Taiwan and education in the
United States are different.
3. The Spanish Influence in America (Page 157)
Hispanic contributions to American culture are reflected in the words we
speak, the foods we consume, and the music we enjoy.
4. Winning (Page 158)
To me, winning means overcoming obstacles.
