State any other description(s): Region One is mostly riverine and densely forested. The many hills further
In - land makes it a mountainous terrain.

7. Please explain the difficulties that you experience as a result of the physical features of your region.
The geographical layout of the region makes it difficult to travel around. During the rainy season the
Road ways are very muddy. Vehicular traffic becomes risky or dangerous. Transportation by both, water and
land are very costly.

8. On a scale of 1 to 5 with 5 being the highest and 1 being the lowest, how would you rate the education
service being offered in your region?

9. Please give the reason(s) for your answer at #8. The welfare of teachers are not given sufficient attention. It
is difficult to communicate with residents in some villages (language barrier), especially for teachers from the
coast. There are a lot of untrained teachers. Schools are at a disadvantage in terms of modern technology; e.g.
the internet system, and the use of computerized equipment. There is always a shortage of materials such as
stationeries. Poor communication results in delays in submission of reports. There is a definite lack of parental
support. Some students have to seek their own livelihood, both boys and girls.

10. List by importance, the most critical challenges to the delivery of education in your region.

- Inadequate staffing
- Non availability of access to modern technology.
- Lack of parental support.
- Non supply of electricity.
- Absenteeism
- Truancy
- Teenage pregnancy.

11. State how the challenges listed at no. 10 affect the education of the children in your region.
The challenges listed at 10 affect the overall results and students' performance in the following ways:
– Poor reading and writing skills.
– Indiscipline
– School drop-outs.
– Poor attendance.
– Poor academic performance.
– Curriculum cannot be delivered effectively.

12. What do you think can be done to solve the problems/challenges mentioned at no.10?
– Provide the necessary equipment to boost the Internet.
– Improve the Digicel signal in all locations.
– For stake holders to come on board more meaningfully.
– Equip all schools with electrical energy.
– Provide training opportunities for teachers.
– Greater collaboration between schools and government officials.
– Provide for the welfare of teachers.
– Give schools the full complement of teachers.

13. List the interventions/projects that are being done by stakeholders (eg Govt, MOE, MOAF, Churches,
NGOs) to improve education delivery in your region.

- NGO’s have attempted to empower key stakeholders to bring about positive changes(BY
FAITH, PAHO)
– UNICEF has also pledged donation of furniture to boost the population in one particular school.
– Mathematics Intervention Programme.
– Education Management Programme.
– The Hot Meal /School Feeding Programme.
– The H.E.Y.S. Programme.
– C.P.C.E. Teachers' training programme.

14. In your opinion, are the interventions you listed at no. 11 meeting the needs of the target
groups/beneficiaries (eg. students, teachers, etc.)? Please explain your answer.
Yes, to an extent, but more is expected. The implementation of the programmes also need the support from
the various communities.

15. Which challenge(s) to education delivery is/are NOT being addressed by the interventions/projects being
implemented currently?
– The Carib dialect is a challenge and is not being addressed appropriately.
– Improved technology and Internet access.
– Delivery of adequate teaching/learning materials.
– The supply of Electricity.

16. What other suggestions do you have for the overall improvement of education delivery in your
region/education district?

– Support staff for D.E.O.


– Revised salary package for Hinterland teachers.
– A social worker in the village would be an asset since there are many social ills affecting the pupils in
the schools and young people out of school.
– The presence of a Schools Welfare Officer.
– Face-to-face meeting with stakeholders.
– Improved students E-net research capacity relevant to their studies.
– Furnishing classrooms and make them suitable for special courses.
– Introduce T.T/E.D.P.M. in our Secondary schools and Primary top schools.
– Return of enrichment courses such as: music, sewing, physical education etc.
– Hold monthly Workshops and Clinical supervision for teachers.
