1. What is Table Tennis?
- Table tennis, also called Ping-Pong, this ball game similar in principle to lawn
tennis and played on a flat table divided into two equal courts by a net fixed
across its width at the middle.
- an indoor game based on tennis, played with small paddles and a ball
bounced on a table divided by a net.
2. Write a short paragraph about the table tennis history.
- In the early days of the 20th century, the game was invented from England
and was originally called Ping-Pong, the name table tennis is adopted in 1920’s
and being played around the many countries. In 1921, the Table Tennis
Association was founded, and in 1926 renamed the English Table Tennis
Association. The International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) followed in 1926.
On the first world championship were held from London in 1926 until the
table tennis became an Olympic sport in 1988, with singles and doubles
competition on for men and women.
3. What are the equipments and facilities for table tennis?
* Ball
-The ball that is used in the game is a 2.7 gram, small celluloid ball that is
usually colored white or orange depending on the preference of the players.
* Rubber, Racket or Paddle
- The table tennis racket or paddle is another important piece of equipment
that is used in hitting the ball back and forth on the table. Its shape is similar
to the ones used in the game of tennis except that it is smaller and is made of
different materials.
* Table Tennis Table
-Included in the list of important table tennis equipment is the table where the
game is to be played. The ITTF specifies that the official table tennis tables
that are used in the tournament must be 9 ft long, 5 ft wide and must be
placed 30 inches high from the ground.
* Net and Post
-The net which is the last piece of important equipment is usually brought
together with the table or with the rackets or it can be bought by itself.
Whatever the case, it should be six feet long and six inches wide and has an
upper white tape that is not more than 15mm wide.
4. What are the basic skills in table tennis?
* Grips
> Orthodox or Shake-hand Grip
-This is popularly used worldwide. Grasps the racket as if to shake hands with
it. It gives you the best forehand and backhand.
> Penhold Grip
-This is similar to holding a pen between the thumb and forefinger. The
forefinger and thumb reach over the shoulders of the blade, with the other
fingers spread over the back. Only one side of the racket is used for both
forehand and backhand shots.
* Serving
> Topspin serves
-With either a forehand or backhand stroke, the ball is put into play by
projecting it upward from the flat free hand. As the ball hit the racket, which is
swung forward and upward meets descending it.
> Backspin serves
-The ball is struck with a downward, forward motion of the racket. The racket
face is open (facing upward from the tabletop and net).
* Strokes
> Push shot
-Is the basic defensive shot.Push shot Is the basic defensive shot.
> Forehand/Backhand Drive
-The forehand and Backhand drive is an attacking stroke played with a small
amount of topspin.
> Smash Shot
-Is used on a higher-than-the-net bounce, the higher the better. It is high
straight forward and downward without spin on the opponent’s court. This is
an offensive stroke.
