MATH 251 - Number Theory

This document provides a course outline for Math 251 - Number Theory taught at Lahore University of Management Sciences during the Autumn 2004–2005 quarter. The course will introduce students to elementary number theory concepts over 10 weeks, covering topics like divisibility, prime numbers, congruences, and Fermat's theorem. It will be taught by Dr. Shamim Arif and include 20 lectures, 10 tutorials, quizzes, a midterm, and a final exam for grading. The goal is for students to learn the divisibility properties of integers and classical mathematical results.

Description This course introduces students to elementary number theory. Starting with the
divisibility properties of integers the course covers some of the most
fascinationing parts of classical mathematics such as congruences, prime
numbers, number theoretic functions, Euler, Fermat and Wilson theorems. It
ends with a simple introduction to the famous Fermat’s equation x n  y n  z n .

Goals At the end of the course the student should have learnt:
 The divisibility properties of integers
 Solutions of congruences
 Some of the oldest known and unknown results of classical mathematics.
