HIRARC Report
During the lab visit at water, highway, geo technique lab we had identified some hazards
which can cause so many impacts to site users and also to environment. Most of the lab that
we visited already has existing risk control measures for hazards that can be found on
operating machines and equipment’s. Due to that, we just recommended to maintain with
existing control measures such as wearing googles, safety boots, leather gloves, earplug if it
involves exposure of high noise, safety briefing and using equipment and machines manual
before using the lab and operating the machines and equipment’s to eliminate or control all
hazards even if it is low risk. Nevertheless, work activities or machines and equipment’s in
three labs which involves maintenance of machine and equipment’s especially battery in it
we recommended to use safety measures as LOTO. When machines or equipment’s are being
prepared for service or maintenance, they often contain some form of “hazardous energy”
that can cause harm to people in the area. When we talk about hazardous energy, we mean
any type of energy that can be released and might harm a person. This could include energy
of the following types like chemical, electrical, hydraulic, mechanical, pneumatic, Thermal,
Other sources of energy. Without the use of proper LOTO safety procedures, the serviced
equipment can unexpectedly start up or otherwise release these forms of energy. This can
lead to injuries and even death to the people working on the machine and even to others
working in the area or living in the community. Energy sources including electrical,
mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, chemical, thermal, or other sources in machines and
equipment can be hazardous to workers. During the servicing and maintenance of machines
and equipment, the unexpected start up or release of stored energy can result in serious injury
or death to workers. However, for the hazard such as ergonomics lift weight that can be found
in handling and operating machines and equipment’s in labs we recommended to keep a right
body posture when using them because If consistently lift heavy items in bad posture or bend
forward frequently, that may be setting up for back pain. When we bend forward, the forward
curve in our spine, called a lordosis, straightens out or reverses. This can place excessive
pressure on our spinal discs. When this happens, the disc can be pushed out of place and
become herniated or ruptured, leading to pain and sciatica.
