DiffGeom PSet 1

1. Find the parametric equation of the curve traced by a point P that is a fixed distance from the center of a circle of radius b rolling outside a circle of radius a without slipping. 2. Show that the curvature of an implicit curve C given by f(x,y)=0 at a point P0 where fy(P0)≠0 is given by the formula |fxxfy2 - 2fxyfx fy + fyyfx2| / (fx2 + fy2)3/2. 3. Find the formula for curvature of a curve given by r=f(θ) in polar coordinates and use it to find the curvature of the cardioid r=1

Differential Geometry (MATH F 342)
Practice problem sheet 1(Based on Chapters 1 and 2)
All problems in the text are recommended for practice. Besides, here are few more problems to sharpen
your skills.
1. Let a circle of radius b roll on the circle of radius a from outside (as in epicycloids) with b > a>0 .
Find the parametric equation of the curve traced by a point P at distance b/2 from the center of the
circle of radius b as this circle rolls. Refer to the Figure 1 below, where P0 can be taken as initial
position of P.
( Such figures, also known as epitrachoid, can be drawn by using plastic Spiro graphs sold at
village fairs. For on line interactive generation of Spiro graphs, go to

2. Suppose f(x, y) is a smooth function and consider the curve C given by the implicit equation f(x, y)
= 0 passing through point P0 =( x0 ,y0). If fy(P0)  0, show that the curvature of C at P0 is given by

| f xx f y2  2 f xy f x f y  f yy f x2 |

3. Find the formula for the curvature of a curve with equation r  f ( ) in polar cordinates. Find
r  1  cos .
