AAU3961 Description 1 Overview

1 Overview

The architecture of base stations has been changing over the years. Compared with
conventional radio frequency units (RFUs), remote radio units (RRUs) originally proposed by
Huawei support installation close to the antenna, reducing the transmit power and the feeder
loss by 3 dB, and enlarging the network coverage. It has been a trend in the industry that the
functions of RF modules are integrated into the antenna. More and more operators choose the
RRU solution for the entire network.
The active antenna system (AAS) provides a new type of RF module following the RFU and
RRU. Featured by incorporating functions of RRUs and conventional antennas, AAS modules
require less site resources.
With the rapid development of mobile broadband (MBB), multimode and multi-band base
stations have been leading the trend. However, the increasingly complex base stations and
more RF modules raise the OPEX considerably for operators. Simplification of base stations
is becoming a trend in building multimode and multi-band networks. To follow this trend,
Huawei first introduces the AAS technology and launches the a series of AAU products.
The AAU3961 is a hero product for Huawei to implement the AAS technology. Compared
with the RRU, the AAU3961 adopts the active antenna technology to further incorporate the
functions of RF modules into the antenna.
The AAU3961 supports a maximum of two active frequency bands and two active RUs in
4T4R mode.
The AAU3961 can reduce the jumper loss by about 0.8 dB and save energy by 10% by
incorporating the functions of RF modules into the antenna.
Compared with the RRU, the AAU3961 simplifies site installation and reduces the installation
time.
As a type of active antenna product, the AAU3961 can connect to RRUs or RFUs. By
replacing antennas on the live network with AAU3961s, you can deploy new GSM, UMTS, or
LTE sites without increasing the number of antennas.

 AU: TSI4518R00
 RU: RU3971 and RU3261

1.2.1 AU
An AU is an antenna unit, which is a major component of an AAU. The AU performs the
antenna function and RET function. In addition, it provides ports and installation slots. The
AU for the AAU3961 is TSI4518R00.
Figure 1-2 shows the physical ports on the TSI4518R00, and Table 1-1 describes these ports.

1.2.2 RU
The RU is a radio frequency unit, which converts and transfers signals between the baseband
unit (BBU) and the antenna system. The BBU and RU are connected through CPRI ports
using the fiber optic cable or electrical cable to transmit CPRI signals.

AAU3961 Description 2 Technical Specifications

 The receiver sensitivity of GSM, as recommended in 3GPP TS 51.021, is calculated by deducting

the antenna gain from the receiver sensitivity measured at the antenna connector on condition that
the channel rate reaches 13 kbit/s and the bit error rate (BER) does not exceed 0.02.
 The receiver sensitivity of LTE, as recommended in 3GPP TS 36.104, is calculated by deducting the
antenna gain from the receiver sensitivity measured at the antenna connector under the condition of
a 5 MHz channel bandwidth based on the FRC A1-3 in Annex A.1 (QPSK, R = 1/3, 25 RBs)
standard.
