Lean Manufacturing Case

The document calculates the takt time and capacity for an oven batch machine processing 3 cup products. It determines the customer request over a week, available production time, and cycle time for each product batch. It then calculates the takt time as the total available time divided by the total customer request. It finds that while each product's cycle time meets the takt time, the total time needed exceeds the available time, showing the oven does not have the capacity to meet the customer request.

Takt Time and Capacity for a batch machine (i.e.

Oven)

Let us imagine 3 products of the same family processed in a oven. Set-up is negligible.

The oven has a Cycle Time of 10 hours = 600 minutes.

The products are of different sizes and the parts that can be processed in a batch are:

Small Cup = 100 pcs. , Mid Cup = 75 pcs. , Large Cup = 50 pcs.

Customer Request is for a week equal to:

Small Cup = 500 pcs. , Mid Cup = 750 pcs. , Large Cup = 350 pcs.

The time available is 3 shift for 5 days a week. Do not consider lunch time break.

Calculate the Takt Time of the family and verify if the oven has the capacity to meet customer request

Exercise Solution

Because the products are of the same family the customer request can be added and is equal to 1600 cups.

The available time is 24 h * 5 days = 120 h = 7200 minutes

The Takt Time for this family is: 7200 / 1600 = 4,5 minutes

If the Cycle Time of each product is considered, the result is:

C/T Small Cup = 600 min / 100 pcs = 6 min

C/T Mid Cup = 600 min / 75 pcs = 8 min

C/T Large Cup = 600 min / 50 pcs = 12 min

In this case seems that any C/T meet the Takt Time, is this the sign that the oven has not the capacity?

Moving the problem on the time scale:

Available time is 7200 minutes.

Time necessary to meet customer request = 500 * 6 + 750 * 8 + 350 * 12 = 3000 + 6000 + 4200 = 13200 minutes.

The available time is less than the requested time. This means that there is no capacity to meet customer request.
