Material Derivative

This document discusses Lagrangian and Eulerian coordinate systems for describing the motion of a fluid element through space over time. It defines the substantial derivative, also called the material or total derivative, as the rate of change of a property following the motion of the fluid. This is expressed as the local time derivative plus convective derivatives accounting for the flow velocity. The substantial derivative allows describing how a property varies both due to physical processes and transport by the local flow velocity.
