ENEN 110D
Tutorial Sheet 1

1. Briefly discuss the differences in the quality of water obtained from groundwater
sources and water obtained from surface water sources. What kinds of treatment
processes might be needed for groundwater intended for potable use? For water
taken from a mountain reservoir and intended for potable use? For water taken
from the Caroni River and intended for potable use?

2. Why is aeration used in water-treatment plants? Is it more commonly used with

ground-water or surface water? Why?

3. Name and describe three commonly used water-in-air systems found in water
purification plants.

4. Define (a) discrete particles, (b) flocculating particles, (c) dilute suspension, and
(d) concentrated suspension.

5. Determine the settling velocity of a spherical particle with a diameter of 100 µm

and a specific gravity of 2.3 in water at 25°C.

6. Describe the four functional zones of a long-rectangular settling tank.

7. Explain the importance of the jar test in coagulation operations and describe the
test.

8. A water-treatment plant is to process 17,000 m3/d. A settling basin for a type-2

suspension is to operate at 0.85m/h. Determine the dimension of the basin for (a)
a long-rectangular unit and (b) a circular unit. Check detention times, horizontal
velocities, and weir overflow rates.

9. Describe the various mechanisms that are thought to occur when a rapid filter bed
is in use.

10. Name and characterize the three most significant components of municipal
wastewater.

11. A channel type grit chamber is to be installed in a wastewater treatment plant

processing 8550 m3/d. The flow-through velocity is to be controlled at 0.33 m/s
by a downstream portioning weir and the settling velocity of the particles is 0.02
m/s. Determine the channel dimensions for a depth to width ratio of 1:1.5 and the
detention time.

12. Define and describe the components of (a) primary treatment and (b) secondary
treatment of wastewater.
