Hydraulic Structure II Assignment

The document provides information for designing hydraulic structures on rivers in Ethiopia. It includes: 1. Details needed to analyze major river basins in Ethiopia such as location, resources, developments, and problems. 2. Design parameters for a weir with a vertical drop including bed material, discharge, heights, and afflux. 3. A request to redesign the weir from example 3.3 checking pressures, uplift, head loss gradient, and designing protection works upstream and downstream.

Hydraulic structure II Assignment

1. List down the Ethiopian major river basins and including their surface and
underground water resources potential:

• Location

• Geographic features

• Available potential surface and underground water resources

• Major developments in the river and its priority in the country.

• Identify the major problems in the river basin

Example 3.3.

2. A weir with a vertical drop is proposed to be constructed having the

following information:

 Nature of bed: Coarse sand (Bligh’s C = 12)

 Flood discharge, Q = 300m3/s

 Height of weir body, H = 2m

 Height of falling shutter = 0.60m

 Afflux = 0.50m

 Specific gravity of material = 2.40

3. Design the length and thickness of aprons and draw the cross-sections of
the weir. Reasonably assume any missing data.
Re design the problem given in example 3.3 (analysis) check pressure head at
varies point and its safety against

 piping

 Uplift pressure

 Draw HGL

 Design protection work(u/s & d/s)

Project Work
For the given data design all including protection work and check both its
structural stability (sliding & overturning) and safety for flow through sub surface
causes. (use Blighs and khoslas theory)
 Maximum flood discharge = 2585 m3/s
 H.F.L. before construction = 255 m
 Minimum water level = d/s bed level = 248 m
 F.S.L. of canal = 254 m
 Coefficient of creep, C = 12 Head loss in the canal head regulator = 0.2 m
 Average river bed material size = 0.2 mm
 Exit gradient (GE) = 1/6)
 Assume any other data not given
