CHAPTER 1
INTROUCTION
1.1 GENERAL
Mobile phones have become ubiquitous in our society. Smart phones
have wide applications in various fields such as education, healthcare, travel,
entertainment, news and business due to their easy access through BlackBerry’s
App World, Apple’s App Store, Google Android Market or Windows Market Place
for mobiles. These days various kinds of apps are available for almost everything.

One of the important area is transportation.Transportation is a major issue these

days. One of the most used means of transportation is roadways. One of the major
forms of road transport consists of the private passenger car. These cars are
generally used with only a single rider. An over abundance of cars creates various
problems which includes increased traffic, increase pollution, parking congestion
and many more.

1.2 OBJECTIVE
The application is an attempt to make a system which is user friendly and provides
an opportunity to share cars. We intent on making an application which would be
help the users to upload, view and register for journeys both short distance (daily
commute to work ) and long intercity trips. The system will be designed taking into
consideration the users need about safety.

1.3 DOMAIN
SURVEILLENCE USING GPS TECHNOLOGY
The supervision of the actions, activities, or other varying information, usually of
people for the purpose of influencing, supervision, directing, or protecting is called
surveillance .Close inspection of a person or group, especially one under suspicion.
The act of observing or the condition of being observed.
French word for "watching over" is surveillance. Inspection from a distance by
means of electronic equipment (such as CCTV cameras), or interception of
electronically transmitted information (such as Internet traffic or phone calls) is
referred to as surveillance.
Surveillance is very useful to governments and law enforcement to maintain social
control, recognize and monitor threats, and prevent/investigate criminal activity.
Corporate surveillance is the monitoring of a person or group's behavior by a
corporation. The data collected is most often used for marketing purposes or sold
to other corporations, but is also regularly shared with government agencies.
It can be used as a form of business intelligence, which enables the corporation to
better tailor their products and/or services to be desirable by their customers.

1.4 ALGORITHM
The project consists of two different applications for driver and user. To run both of
them, the server is made to run first. Once server starts then :

1.4.1 DRIVERS PART

 The registered driver has to login to the app with given username
and password to start the service.
 His current location will be tracked using GPS and it will be shown
on map.this location will be constantly updated.
 Once he receives a ride request as a message, the service will be
started for a particular route where taxi can be shared by max 4
persons.
 The ride fare page will calculate the fare for individual passenger
according to the distance travelled.
 If driver is facing some problem with the car he can search the
nearest car repair shop and gps will help navigate to that location
and during that time he can update his status as unavailable.
1.4.2 USER’S PART
 The registered user has to login by giving the correct username and
password and the new user has to register.
 To request for a ride click retrieve location and the list of drivers in
the nearby area will be shown with car details
 In that user can book the suitable cab by specifying the number of
seats available.
 A message with the passenger details will be sent to the driver and
he can pick up te new passenger.

1.5 EXISTING SYSTEM

Taxi cabs are used as the most reliable means of transport these days
and the demand are usually higher than the number of taxis in peak hours in major
cities. People who does not have private vehicles choose the option of a taxi and as
a result demand for taxi is increasing.

As a solution to this problem the concept of sharing a taxi was introduced but it is
having lot of disadvantages and limitations.

Many applications have been developed over the time period for booking a taxicab
like Ola cabs, Taxi for sure and uber etc. These applications are used for serving
one passenger at a time.

Also there are some applications developed for long trip cab share such as bla bla
cars but they are not yet used as a trusted mode of transport and is not being used
on a large scale because of the following reasons.

1.5.1 LIMITATIONS OF EXISTING SYSTEM

 Safety issues for the fellow passengers travelling in a shared car.

 Reliable application and service provided by the driver

 Fair fare calculations for smaller distances

 No facilities in case of any fault arises with the car
