THE PROBLEM AND ITS SETTING

Introduction

Philippines is predominantly an agricultural country. Our agricultural products are

topnotch from staple rice to different vegetables. However that position is now being
threatened due to conversion of agricultural lands into commercial and residential areas.
If left unchecked, these factors could make it a necessity to find an alternative in growing
crops in increasing limitation of spaces.
With our agricultural lands shrinking and our forests being preserved making it
unable to create more farmlands, our farmers are now being forced to maximize the
amount of area under cultivation to generate the needed yield. As the space available for
cultivation continues to decrease, it is a pressing concern to all of us to find another way
in which we could keep our agricultural production in par with population growth.
One of the ways being studied is the application of artificial lighting in confined
places to induce the growth of the plant sample. The effects of fluorescent are now
under investigation with promising results. With the invention of LED the use of artificial
lighting could now be made with less cost and energy consumption. In different studies
conducted, blue light supplemented with green light could greatly enhance the growth of
plants being subjected.
It is a universal knowledge that plants needed sunlight in order to grow. Plants have a
photoreceptor that receives sunlight thus catalyzing the internal processes that results to
production of edible plants. But with the introduction of LED to the world, it is now
possible to use a cheaper, not-space consuming artificial light source in applying the
desired amount of light to imitate the sun in its purpose of activating the food production
processes of plants.
This study will determine the effects of different combination, sequence and time of
application to different plant specie. The first trial conducted is the effects of applying
blue LED supplemented by a smaller amount of green LED. The plants chosen for this
experiment are kangkong, pechay and sili. These plants are chosen because they
represent the usual vegetable in a Filipino table in addition to their fast germination stage
of just under one week.
Utilizing LED will also make it feasible to grow a wide variety of plants inside a structure
like a greenhouse in the middle of the city. If done in large scale, plant growers would
never have to worry about the fickle weather system and pestilence that from time to
time affects the growth of the said plants. In addition to that benefit, almost all factors
that affect the plant growth can be controlled thus making it more predictable on how
and when we could harvest our crops.
We are not yet experiencing a general shortage of agricultural products right now but if
the trend of agricultural land reduction will continue, it will soon become unsustainable.
Thus looking for an alternative which utilizes the current technology and reduced space
