Structural Dynamics Simulation: Department

The document describes a structural dynamics simulation project conducted by a group of mechanical engineering students. The group analyzed the natural frequency of an NACA 2412 airfoil using COMSOL Multiphysics. They found the airfoil's first natural frequency and then performed frequency domain and time dependent analyses by applying forces at different frequencies. Key results included how the natural frequency and structural response changed with scale factor but not angle of attack.

Geometry:
In order to form geometry of air foil first we have to plot the following air foil
coordinates one by one in COMSOL.

To generate a point in COMSOL first we have to select work plane (xy-plane) then we have to select
point command then enter x and y coordinates and press build selected option.
Then repeat the same procedure to generate all 35 points.

To joint these points right click on geometry in model builder window and select Bezeir
polygon. Then make this geometry solid.
Then again right click on geometry in the model builder window and select union and
unite all points and polygon into a single entity.

In order to extrude this airfoil right click on geometry 1 in model builder window and
select extrude and set distance from work plane to 1m and press build selected.
MESH:
We did Free Tetrahedral meshing in aerofoil with predefined setting of Extra fine and
we obtain the following;

SOLID MECHANICS:
In Solid Mechanics we apply a fixed constraint and a load of 100 N in negative y
direction as shown in the figure below;
MATERIALS:
For the Material we have chosen Aluminium alloy from the material browser of the
COMSOL as shown in the figure below;
EIGEN FREQUENCY ANALYSIS

In order to determine the natural frequency of the aerofoil we have to do eigen

frequency analysis, we have computed in COMSOL MULTI PHYSICS.
We have chosen NACA 2412 and the materials we used is Aluminium Alloy.
Following are the natural frequencies we have calculated;

There are six natural frequencies given by

the COMSOL by applying different types of
forces .

Now the results we obtain in all of these frequencies are given below ;

3 4

5 6

Now the most realistic response in the case of aerofoil is when the force is applied
perpendicular to the surface which is obtained in the first eigen frequency so we will
analyse the system by considering the first eigen frequency obtained and analyse it on
later analysis.

We have computed eigen frequency analysis as a parametrical sweep to investigate the

natural frequency depends on which parameter.
When we change the Angle of attack of aerofoil we found that there is no such effect on
natural frequency as shown below;
But when we change the scale factor we found significant decrease in natural frequency
as shown below;

Now we analyse the aerofoil with the help of the natural frequency obtained through
eigen frequency analysis.
We analysis aerofoil NACA 2412 with a cord length of 150mm and 0 degree Angle of
Attack and 1m length.
FREAQUENCY DOMAIN ANALYSIS

Now In frequency domain analysis we apply a point load of 100 N and apply to our
consideration aerofoil with a different frequency in the range of 10 to 15 as shown in
the figure below;
Natural Frequency is also in the range of the
above applied frequencies so we can see the
resonance phenomenon easily in the results.
The resonance phenomenon occur at approximately 12.3 because there system natural
frequency coincide with the forced frequency, Now we can plot the stresses, strain etc
against the forced frequency and we can easily analyse the changes in it.

DISPLACEMENT IN THE DIRECTION OF FORCE:

TOTAL DISPLACEMENT:

VARIATION OF AMPLITUDE WITH RESPECT TO FORCE:

When we apply a different magnitude force we will see the significant changes in
amplitude at resonance.
VARIATION OF AMPLITUDE WITH RESPECT TO SCALE FACTOR:

When we plotted Scale factor against

amplitude at resonance we see a drastically
change in amplitude as shown in the plot.
This is because due to scale factor natural
frequency also changes and we apply a
forced frequency with respect to scale
factor of 1.

VARIATION OF AMPLITUDE WITH RESPECT TO ANGLE OF ATTACK:

As we have seen that the natural frequency is not changing with respect to angle of
attack in EIGEN FREQYENCY ANALYSIS so the amplitude also not change when we
applied a force at frequency that exactly matched with the natural frequency.
TIME DEPENDENT ANALYSIS

For the time dependent analysis we apply a sinusoidal force of 100 N in the y direction as shown in the
figure below;

The sinusoidal force with respect to time is shown in the figure below;
VARIATION OF AMPLITUDE WITH RESPECT TO SINUSOIDAL FORCE:
Variation of amplitude of displacement is shown in the figure below;

CONCLUSION

 Natural Frequency of the aerofoil does not depends upon the Angle of Attack.
 There is a significant reduction in the natural frequency when we increase the
scale factor.
 At resonance the reduction in amplitude occur if we decrease the magnitude of
force.
