TUTORIAL PLAN

Unit: HPE 1202: Physical Performance Laboratory 2 Topic: AFL Week: 1

Warm Up Activity

BALL RUNNER
Duration 5-10mins
Equipment 1 ball per 2 participants
Area Size Use a rectangle
Instructions  Variation of chasey
 Students in pairs stand in two lines
 Pass ball between the 2 students – throw or handpass – move into
ball runner
Variation and  Roll ball along ground and pick up – dynamic stretch
progression  High ball
 Change distance – increase to slow down handball, decrease to
speed up
Teachable moment Energy and enthusiasm
Acceleration and speed – loading legs

Key Teaching Points  Head up, eyes on ball


 Side on to prepare for run
 Push off foot closest to partner to run away

Activity #1

KICKING – BOMB ZONE


Duration 5-10mins
Equipment 4 markers and a football
Area Size 10m x 10m grid
Instructions  Groups work within area
 Players attempt to kick the ball into the other teams area
 To score points you must
o Land the ball in the other teams area
o Mark the ball coming into your area
 Ball lands outside the area no points scored
Variation and  Compete against other teams
progression  Count points to engage students
 Losing team – push ups as consequence

 Rotate group member roles – kicking or catching
 “nose to toes”

Activity #2

HANDBALL – DOWN THE LINE & FREO FAST BALL


Duration 5-10mins
Equipment Marker each and 1 ball
Area Size Zig Zag grid
Instructions  Students will handball ball up the zig zag
 Run from end to start everyone rotates one spot
 Follow the ball down the line

o Handball down the line


o Return back to the start

Variation and  Add more balls to zig-zag – increase hand/eye coordination


progression  Increase distance between students to practice long
hanballs
 Decrease distance between students to speed up the
process
 Add competition between grouos to encourage quick
movement of ball
Key Teaching Points  Use both hands to handball for quicker ball movement
 Stand side on for easy rotation from receiving to passing
 Stepping forward into the handball

Activity #3

MARKING – BEAT THE BOUNDARY


Duration 5-10mins
Equipment 2 markers and a football
Area Size 10m lines
Instructions  Ball is handballed across playing area
 Attempting to cross the opponents boundary with ball
 Your team must mark the ball
 Points for a mark, points for crossing the line
Variation and Start group as is in a circle – Middle person trying to handball out of
progression circle

Key Teaching Points  Keep the ball low ball – no high contact
 Hands in “W” to avoid crocodile catching
 Eyes and head up, watching where the ball goes to mark it
before it crosses team line

Activity #4

PICK UP – LINE DRILL


Duration 10mins
Equipment 4 markers and 2 balls
Area Size 10m with markers set at 1/3 and 2/3
Instructions  Ball starts at 1/3 mark
 Player runs in picks up ball off ground
 Runs through and places ball down at next marker
 Next player runs through and completes the same sequence

Variation and  Add in roll to opponent – drill becomes roll at one end and
progression stationary pick up at the other
 Add in handball – student scoops ball and handpasses to
other side, ball is rolled and drill continues
 When rolling the ball, try to make it move in different
directions – unpredicted

Key Teaching Points  Opposite foot to scooping hand beside the ball
 Bring ball to chest quickly to protect
 Bend more at knees less at hips – getting low but keeping
torso up for balance

Activity #5

EVASION – CROSS OVER


Duration 10mins
Equipment 8 markers and 6 balls
Area Size 10m x 20m rectangle with markers at half way
Instructions  2 teams start in their half with a ball
 teams attempt to cross over opposite area and run past try
line with ball
 Opposite team attempts to tag players with 2 hands before
they cross
