By definition, a Virus is something which can self-replicate itself into multiple hosts. A
computer virus could spread by floppy discs, USB drive, emails or any other communication
protocol available which can send data from one computer to another. Viruses are usually
stealthy, hidden inside other legitimate applications or documents and don't destroy data or
incapacitate the affected computer immediately after infection. Instead they use that time to
infect other computers around them.
Trojans, on the other hand are defined as something which impersonates as something else to
fool the user. The key difference between a Trojan and a Virus is that while viruses hide
inside a legitimate document or application, a Trojan impersonates as a legitimate document
or application itself and usually doesn't do anything useful. The second significant difference
is that while most Viruses spread automatically without any human intervention, Trojans
usually require human interaction to infect the computer.E-mail based Viruses which infect a
user's computer only after the user opens them are actuall Trojans.
AdBlock Plus
Every ad-company's bane but every bandwidth conscious internet surfer's boon, ad block plus removes
advertisements from websites. On installation it asks for a source to download the blacklist from. Easy list is the
best. Select it and notice, sot of the ads on the internet disappear.
Remove It Permanently (RIP)
RIP is a companion add-on to ad block plus though it has other uses. When you block an ad,
you still load its frame on the web page. RIP removes a frame from the page and makes the
page look cleaner. You could, for example remove right and left ad-panels and make the page
a lot broader.
FlashBlock
Have you been irritated by the countless times unwanted flash animations load and waste
bandwidth and CPU? Well, FlashBlock replaces every flash object with an icon which can be
clicked to display that flash object. This way you will only see flash if you WANT to (for
example, YouTube or another flash based video site).
NO Script
This is an interesting add-on. Since most browser vulnerabilities and phishing attempts are
through the use of scripts, NO Script blocks all scripts, like JavaScript. Obviously, this
removes a lot of functionality from the browser. But hey, you could re-enable it with a single
click.
DTA - DownThemAll
This is the first and only dedicated download manager and accelerator based on Firefox
engine. It supports pause and resume of downloads and downloading multiple chunks of files
at a time to accelerate the download speed.
Flash Got
Don't like DTA? Then you can use your favourite download manager right from Firefox,
using flash got. It’s an add-on which helps you to integrate other download managers with
Firefox.
ChatZilla
This is a neat IRC (Internet Relay Chat) client for Firefox which makes a great alternative to
standalone IRC clients for those who want something with a smaller hard disk footprint. It
may be small but its LOADED with features.
FireFTP
This is a MUST-HAVE add-on for people who share files over the internet through FTP. It’s
a full featured FTP client for Firefox.
Cache Viewer
This is an add-on to present a fully graphical interface to view Firefox’s cache.
KeepVid
This is not an extension, but a bookmark let which can be downloaded from keepvid.com by
following the onscreen instructions. This service helps you download videos from YouTube,
etc.
Developer Toolbar
This is an awesome add-on for web developers which add a toolbar to the browser full of
advanced controls which can enable and disable several things for those testing and creating
websites.
Google Toolbar
How could one leave out this add-on? This is the Google toolbar for Firefox. It has several of
Google’s search functions integrated into one toolbar.
Extended Status bar
This useful add-on makes your status bar display lots of useful data like page load time,
loading speed, etc. Another must-have was for power users.
User Agent Switcher
An add-on for advanced users, this can make the browser appear like another browser to the
site it’s visiting. This way if a website checks for IE and refuses to allow Firefox visitors for
example, you could just disguise yourself as IE and see if the site loads.
WML Browser
This useful add-on helps you to browse pages encoded in Wireless Mark-up Language, in
which mobile WAP sites are encoded.
There are a lot more add-ons than the ones discussed here. So head over to
addons.mozilla.org right now to see more! Ticks and Tips: Firefox Extensions.
A computer uses two types of storage devices called primary and secondary storage devices.
The difference between the two is that the primary storage devices hold are essentially
temporary storage devices where information lasts for a short period where are secondary
storage devices allow the storage of information for much longer period, till either it is
removed or modified by some external means. The Central Processor in the computer (CPU)
can access the primary storage directly but cannot interact with the secondary storage
directly. To do information has to be first loaded into the primary storage devices where it
would be processed before being sent back or directed elsewhere.
Primary storage devices are more popularly called memory chips or RAM (Random Access
Memory) chips. The chips hold both instructions and data temporarily to enable the central
processing unit carry out different tasks and keep the computer running. The RAM is
basically of two types: dynamic RAM also called DRAM and static RAM also called SRAM.
DRAM holds information for a very short time, while SRAM holds it as long as the power is
not turned off. Both hold information temporarily but SRAM holds a bit longer.
In older computer RAM chips used to exist as individual chips embedded in the system board
in rows of nine chips each. Each of the eights chips held one byte of memory while the ninth
one, called a parity chip, held a parity bit. The parity chip played a key role by keeping the
computer from crashing by maintaining the integrity of the bits stored in the other eight chips.
In later day computer models RAM chips got organized into SIMMs or single inline memory
modules. A SIMM consisted of a single mini board with several chips and 30 or 72 pins on
its edge. A SIMM can hold from 8 MB to 64 MB of RAM on a single board. Since RAM is
now located on detachable mini boards, it is easier to upgrade RAM by adding more SIMMs.
The most popular form memory module used in computers today is DIMM or Dual inline
memory module. While a SIMM has a data path of 32 bits, a DIMM has a data path of 64
bits. DIMMs are generally available in 8 MB, 16 MB, 32 MB and 64 MB sizes, but it is not
uncommon to find DIMMs in Gigabytes of memory. DIMMs are available with varying
number of pins from 72-pin-DIMMs, used for SO-DIMM to 240-pin-DIMMs, used for
DDR2 SDRAM.
VI Fit, a project at the University of Nevada, Reno, helps children who are blind become
more physically active and healthy through video games. The human-computer interaction
research team in the computer science and engineering department has developed a motion-
sensing-based tennis and bowling exergame.
Exergames are a new type of video game that use physical activity as input and are
considered powerful weapons in the fight against obesity. Unfortunately, exergames have not
yet been accessible to children with visual impairments, although it is evident they could
benefit from them the most."Our games are adaptations of the popular Nintendo Wii Sports
exercise games that have been modified so they can be played without visual feedback,"
Folmer said.
VI Tennis and VI Bowling are the first of several games to be made available. VI Tennis
implements the gameplay of Wii sports tennis providing audio and vibrotactile cues that
indicate when to serve and when to return the ball. It can be played against the computer or
against a friend using two Wii remotes.
"VI Tennis was evaluated at Camp Abilities in New York with 13 children who were blind,"
Folmer said. "We found our game to engage children into levels of active energy expenditure
that were high enough to be considered healthy, which shows the feasibility of using video
games as a health-intervention method."The gameplay of Wii sports bowling is implemented
through VI Bowling with a novel motor-learning feature that allows players to find the
direction in which to throw their ball using vibrotactile feedback. Audio and speech effects
are used to indicate the result of each throw. VI Bowling was evaluated with six adults and
was found to yield levels of active energy expenditure that are comparable to walking.
Compared to the general population, individuals with visual impairments have even fewer
opportunities to engage in physical activities that provide the amounts and kinds of
stimulation needed to maintain adequate fitness and support a healthy standard of living.
Folmer and his team are exploring alternative forms of interaction that allow individuals with
visual impairments to play exercise games and to increase their participation in physical
activity.
Folmer's team includes: Tony Morelli,a doctoral candidate at the University of Nevada,
Reno; John Foley, a faculty member in the physical education department and expert in
movement studies in disability at State University of New York, Cortland; and Lauren
Lieberman, a researcher in the Department of Kinesiology, Sports Studies and Physical
Education at SUNY, Brockport who specializes in adapted physical education, especially
children with sensory impairments.
To play the VI Fit games, a user would need a Wii remote and a Windows PC with bluetooth
support or a USB Bluetooth dongle. The games can be downloaded using instructions at
www.vifit.org. The games are not affiliated with or endorsed by Nintendo.
