Prerequisite: It is strongly recommended that you have taken and passed both Introduction to Business and
Technology and Business and Technology.

Business Communication provides the student with an understanding of communication skills and current and
upcoming technology and its impact personally and professionally. Competency will be developed in the areas of
oral and written communication, interpersonal skills, and the use of current technology. Competencies in the co-
curricular student organization, Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) are integral components of both the
core employability skills standards and the technical skill standard.
Course Standards:
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to
Demonstrate employability skills required by business and industry
Examine and practice grammar, mechanics, and process of composing professionally written business
communication
Apply effective oral communication by communicating in a clear, courteous, concise, and professional
manner
Use active and intentional listening skills to respond appropriately to oral communication
Master word processing software at an expert level to create, edit, and publish professional-appearing
business documents
Integrate multiple forms of communication in the successful pursuit of a career/employment
Apply skills and strategies for the delivery of effective oral communication and presentations
Use digital technologies communication /networking tools, and social networks appropriately to access,
manage, integrate, evaluate, and create information to successfully function in professional settings
Master presentation software to create, edit, publish, and deliver professional-appearing business
presentations
Explore how related student organizations are integral parts of career and technology education course
through leadership development, school and community service projects, entrepreneurship development,
and competitive events.
End of Pathway Assessment:
Students completing a pathway are eligible to take a Credentialing/End of Pathway Assessment (EOPA) upon
successful completion of the above three required courses in the pathway. Students will receive a certificate
(Microsoft PowerPoint) after the completion of the assessment.
Careers:
Students will achieve sufficient competencies to enable them to enter many careers. Some of the career paths
available to students who complete the Business and Computer Science pathway are Administrative Assistant,
Court Reporter, Customer Service Representative, Office Manager, Paralegal, and Computer Operator.
Class Expectations:
RESPECT!!!!!! I will respect you; in return, I expect you to act respectfully. This includes respecting me, your
classmates, all equipment and school property. LISTEN—Follow directions the first time! Do not talk when the
teacher is instructing.
Be in assigned seat and on task when the bell rings. You should be working on your warm-up at the beginning of
class without being asked to do so. Remember, if you waste instructional time in class, it is very likely that you will
have to attend Saturday school to catch up. You will not be allowed to come in during another block to make up
work.
Bring Supplies to class everyday. Even though this is a computer based course, you must bring paper and writing
utensil to class. Wait for my cue to shut down and pack up. I will dismiss you…the clock or bell will not!!
Make-up Work:
Any work missed with an excused absence can be made up; you will have one day for each day missed to make up
work (please work out arrangements with the teacher about makeup work when more than one day is missed).
Any work missed because of an unexcused absence will result in a grade of 0. IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILILTY TO FIND
OUT THE WORK MISSED. If you are assigned to ISS, the work you missed in class will have to be made up during
Saturday School.
Grading
Along with daily work, you will be given various written tests, projects (group and individual) and essays. If your
work is turned in past the due date, 20 points will be deducted per day. Your grade for the semester will be
determined as follows:

Note: The teacher reserves the right to make changes in the courses content and/or grading procedures as
needed.
Class Rules
No food or drinks allowed at workstation
No writing on machines, tables, or books
Do not unplug anything unless told otherwise
Do not “Play” with machines or change software in any way
Put all trash in appropriate place
Keep your work area neat and clean
Keep all other supplies except for this class away from the workstation
No sitting on tables
Make effective use of class time.
NO COMPUTER GAMESS WILL BE PLAYED IN THIS CLASSROOM!!!! NO CELL PHONES OR HEADPHONES!!!!!
Improper use of the computers in any way can result in your dismissal from this class. This includes but is not
limited to using software other than that assigned, logging onto the internet without permission or class
assignment, logging onto inappropriate internet sites, printing without permission, changing screensavers,
changing toolbar, etc. playing games, Facebook, chat sites etc. CONSIDER THIS YOUR OFFICIAL WARNING!!!! First
offense-Detention- Second Offense- Parent Contact- Third Offense- Office referral. A daily grade of zero will be
given to those not following these guidelines.
