Developing Leaders Around You

Leading from the highest level – Part 1

Introduction: Organizations and what Affects Them

1. LEADERSHIP determines the direction in which the church is going to take.

2. STRUCTURE determines the size of the church. (illus. Of linebacker/recruiter)
3. RELATIONSHIPS determine the moral of the church.
4. PERSONNEL determine the potential of the church. (The church will be the size of the
key people in your church)

A. How to develop other people?

1. ENTRY LEVEL – leaders know where they’re going.

2. CREDIBILITY LEVEL – leaders can take their people there.
3. ACCEPTED LEVEL – leaders are able to take followers there. (Most are here)
4. HIGHEST LEVEL – leasers who are able to take leaders with them.
 The function of a leader is to produce more LEADERS, not followers. (Important)
 Every time you develop a leader you multiply.

Observation About Leadership

1. There is a LEADERSHIP VACUUM in the Philippines
2. There is a LEADERSHIP VACUUM in the church in the Philippines

Question: Who is taking the responsibility and time to raise leaders?

B. What is the difference between those who develop followers compared to

leaders?

1. The leaders DESIRE is different.

a. Leaders who raise up followers need to be WANTED and RECOGNIZED.
b. Leaders who raise up leaders DON’T CARE and WANT TO BE REPLACED.

Question: What’s your goal as a leader? EGO? (Talk – very important)

YOU NEVER RAISE LEADERS IF YOU WANT TO TAKE ALL OF THE CREDIT.

Example: Dan had no desire to be needed.

What is a Leader – Part 1

Myths about Leadership

1. Leaders are born, not made – Are leaders born? Not necessarily, leaders can be
developed.
2. Leaders are a rare skill – we have few leaders because leadership is rarely taught.
3. Leadership exists only at the top of the organization – leadership is influence, not
position.
4. All leaders are Charismatic in their personality – charisma will get you in the door,
credibility will keep you there.
5. Leaders control by manipulating people. Manipulation – moving people for MY
advantage. Motivating – moving people for everyone’s advantage.

Understanding the Value of Leadership – L.E.A.D.E.R.

LEADER – Leadership

1. The size of the leadership in the church, determines the size of the church. Non-
growing, churches are the result of non-growing leaders. Everything rises and falls on
leadership.
2. Make a commitment to LEARN how to lead. What is going to keep you from growing as
a leader? CHURCHES ALWAYS STOP GROWING WHEN THE COST GETS TOO HIGH.
3. Start Leading –
a. Leadership that INTERESTS people – When the leader says, I know where I am going.
b. Leadership that IMPRESSES people – When a leader says, I’ve been there.
c. Leadership that INFLUENCES people – When a leader takes others with him to the goal.
d. Leadership that IMPACTS people – Leaders take others and they take their friends with
them.

LEADER – Equipper

Equipper – The ability to grow himself as well as others. IF WE CANNOT LEAD

OURSELVES, WE CAN’T LEAD OTHERS.

E – EVALUATE people (1-10)

Q – QUALIFY people – How well did they do? (1-10)
U – UNITE with them
I – INVEST time with them
P – PROVIDE resources and experiences with them. (Conferences, tapes, books)
Melvin The Shoe Shine Man – “How am I ever going to build a business if I never train anybody
to shine shoes.”

LEADER – Attitude

All successful leaders have – A POSITIVE, TENACIOUS, OVERCOMING, ATTITUDE. They

have a positive attitude toward life. They have learned to FAIL FORWARD. They have a
resiliency to BOUNCE BACK.

THE SIZE OF YOUR ATTITUDE DETERMINES THE OUTCOME. YOUR ATTITUDE IS A

CHOICE. The attitude is to determining factor whether there will be SUCCESS or FAILURE.

LEADER – Dreamer (Visionaries)

 THE INDESPENSABLE QUALITY OF A LEADER IS VISIONS OR DREAMS.

Four Vision Levels of People

1. Wonderers never see the vision – (they go in circles)
2. Followers see it but will pursue it on their own.
3. Personal Achievers see it and pursue it.
4. Leaders see it, pursue it, and take others with them to grab it.

Valley’s Casting a Vision

1. Valley of Ownership – getting people to catch it, and to own it.
2. Valley of Cost or Price – you begin to understand the price. “I had no idea it was
going to take this much effort.” (GUT CHECK)

ALL CHURCHES STOP WHEN THE PRICE GETS TOO HIGH.

YOU NEVER KNOW WHAT YOU HAVE IN YOUR CHURCH UNTIL YOU ASK FOR
COMMITMENT. (TALK!)

LEADER – Excellence – Excel – Go Beyond Average!

 The average leader wants MINIMUM EFFORT for maximum expectation.

 All leaders need to TAKE TO HEART REBECCA’S PRINCIPLE. (TALK!)

REBECCA’S PRINCIPLE – MAXIMUM EFFORT and LITTLE RETURN.

What does REBECCA’S PRINCIPLE teach us?

1. We’re not lived our lives as Legalist. A leader will GIVE more than he RECEIVES.
2. We cannot walk the second time mile until we’ve walked the first.
3. Extra blessings are the result of the extra effort.
Example of Nordstrom’s – Compare to the average usher on Sunday morning.

 You learn from people you like, YOU FOLLOW PEOPLE YOU LOVE.

 It’s so important to connect with people. Leaders must connect with people.

 LEADERS LOVE THEIR PEOPLE.
