Basic Engineering Calculations-R1

This document provides sizing calculations for an ultrafiltration water treatment plant. It outlines the design basis including operating hours, feed and permeate flow rates, and recovery rate. It then sizes the major system components including feed and backwash pumps, cartridge filters, the UF system, air scouring blowers, CIP pumps, and a CIP tank. The calculations show that the selected equipment capacities for each component are adequate to meet the design flows and operating conditions.

SIZING CALCULATIONS

FOR
WATER TREATMENT
PLANT
(ULTRAFILTRATION SYSTEM)
SIZING CALCULATION OF
ULTRAFILTRATION SYSTEM

DESIGN BASIC DATA

DESIGN BASIS:
Working Hours = 16 Hrs

Feed to UF  110 m3/hr.X 2

UF Recovery  85.4 %
UF Cross Flow  9%
UF Reject Flow  9.9 m3/hr.X 2
Net Permeate Production  93.95 m3/hr. X 2

RAW WATER ANALYSIS

Sr. No. Parameter Water Quality Unit

1. Temperature 25 Deg. C
2. pH 6.5-7.5 --
3. TSS <10 Mg/Lit
4. Turbidity <5 NTU

PRODUCT WATER ANALYSIS

Sr. No. Parameter Water Quality Unit

1. Temperature 25 Deg. C
2. pH 6.5-7.5
3. TSS <1
4. Turbidity <1
1. UF FEED PUMP

Quantity = 2 (1 W + 1 SB) /Skid

Total Feed flow = 110 m3/hr.

Total Head = 2.0 bar

Referring the projections & subsequent recovery the required net & feed flow
per skid 1.5 MLD 1.76 MLD respectively, with in 16 Hrs. Hence the selected
capacity of feed pump is OK.

2. UF BACKWASH PUMP

Quantity = 2 (1 W + 1 SB) /Skid

Total Feed flow = 151.2 m3/hr.

Total Head = 1.8 bar

Referring the projections & subsequent recovery the required backwash flow
per membrane is 3.78M3/hr/Membrane .Total Membrane quantity = 40 Nos.
Hence the selected capacity of backwash pump = 151.2M3/hr, which is OK.

3. CARTRIDGE FILTER

Quantity = 1 (1 Duty)

Total feed flow = 110 m3/hr.

Design capacity = 110 m3/hr.

Hence selected 50 micron bag filter with 110 m3/hr. is adequate.

4. UF SYSTEM

UF feed flow = 110 m3/hr./Skid

UF recovery = 85.4 %

UF permeate = 93.95 m3/hr./skid

UF reject = 9.9 m3/hr./Skid

Total Modules = 40 Nos.

Please refer the UF projections for above mentioned values.

5. AIR SCOURING BLOWER

Quantity = 1 (1 Duty)

Required flow / Membrane = 7 m3/hr.

Designed Flow for Skid = 280 m3/hr.

Hence selected 280 M3/hr. Air Blower capacities.

6. UF CIP PUMP

Quantity = 2 (1 duty + 1 Standby)

Total CIP flow required for = 2 X No. of Modules

CIP Pump Flow = 80 m3/hr.

Total Head = 2.0 bar

Hence Selected Pump is OK.

UF feed Pump MOC is considered as SS 316 Casing & Impeller, hence the
same pump will be used for CIP
7. CIP TANK

Quantity = 1 (1 duty)

Design purpose = to store the water CIP Solution

Required quantity for CIP = 4000 Lit

Selected quantity = 5.0 m3/

Hence selected tank capacity of 5 m3 is OK
